Anza-Borrego National Park & Slab City

Borrego Springs, California

Anza-Borrego National Park is full of two of my favorite things: open expanses, and free camping. Literally, this park is filled with dirt roads just waiting for you to drive down, pull over, crack a beer, and set up camp. Not to mention there are rocks to climb, slot canyons to wander, caves to explore, and old military testing grounds to walk through (there are missiles literally sticking out of the ground). My favorite part though might have been dancing on the open road. Like a road out of a movie, there it was, stretching out for miles, and we were it's only residents. So we did what any normal people would do, we had a ballerina photo shoot. There is something extremely liberating about being in the middle of nowhere, standing in the middle of the road, and spinning. It's even better to watch someone else get lost in the moment, dancing in the their joy.

Finally, we headed an hour and a half east of Anza Borrego, a half hour east of the Salton Sea, lies Salvation Mountain, and Slab City, the last free place in the USA. Slab City is something that you have to see to believe. A true "free" city that popped on the granite slabs of now dismantled world war II marine barracks. If you live in Southern California, do yourself a favor and go see it.

Places to see:
Anza-Borrego Slot Canyon
Font's Point
Pumpkin Patch
The Badlands
Blair Valley (for Camping)

Awesome pics! What was it like visiting Slab City?!

Oh man, Slab City is a trip! It is amazing how many regular city "amenities" are in Slab City. There is a coffee shop, a library, an internet cafe. I really enjoyed all of the artwork that people had placed on their land. I've never seen anything quite like Slab City.

that is awesome. my family went there last weekend and we wrote a post about it https://steemit.com/travel/@herronryan/the-2018-slab-city-and-salton-sea-extravaganza-in-pictures . This place really opened my eyes about different lifestyles and our 6 year old learned a lot!
