In 1889, the then undivided Indian government proposed to build bridges over the Padma with the aim of facilitating the connectivity of Calcutta with Assam, Tripura, Nagaland and North Bengal. Later, in 1908, British Engineer Sir Robert Gayles took charge of building the bridge after the grant was granted for the construction of the bridge.
In 1909, the study of the construction of the bridge started. In 1910-11, the bridge was constructed on two banks of Padma. In 1912, the construction of the guide bank of the bridge started. As well as construction of the bridge girdar started. The well is excavated for the construction of the guards. 24 thousand workers worked hard for 5 years and completed the construction of the bridge in 1915. Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy of undivided India, was present. Under the name of the bridge, the bridge was named Hardinge Bridge. The cost of construction of the bridge was 31 million 32 thousand 1 hundred and 64 rupees. The length of the bridge is 5,800 feet. The bridge has 15 spans. When bombing the bridge during the war of liberation in 1971, the number 12 span was damaged. Which were later repaired. [2] The Hardinge Bridge is located on the Padma river in Ishwardi Bheramara border. Only the train moves through the bridge. Bangladesh Railway is responsible for the maintenance and security of the bridge. In the year 2015, this Hardinge Bridge was completed in the year of construction. It is known that 24 thousand workers took 5 years to build this bridge.
