I took a fairly expensive Ice Cave Express daytrip from Reykjavik exactly 1 year ago (as I cannot drive myself) and the views were spectacular the whole way. However, my favourite views were starting from here, where we could see the edge of Vatnajokull glacier, all the way up to Jokulsarlon (aka the glacier lagoon beach). One of my favourite days of travelling ever!
Ice caves were cancelled (boo) due to excessive warmth so we did a glacier walk instead. Other destinations covered on this daytrip were the popular black sand beach near Vik (Reynisfjara), the 2 famous waterfalls and, of course, the glacier lagoon beach at Jokulsarlon. Documented the day here, happy to field questions.
I did this kind of tour in two days with a group and it was totally worth it. Made some friends, got to know the guide pretty well, got to stay in a hotel room for a night and actually have access to a hair dryer (was staying in a budget hostel in Reykjavik)! Our ice cave tour was changed to a regular glacier walk as well but it was still pretty freaking awesome cause we essentially climbed up a mountain of ice. I didn’t have the nice camera I have now anyway so my pictures wouldn’t have captured that deep blue in the ice anyways.
Just wow! Very beautiful :)
