A Beautiful Waterfall Crashing into a Frozen River - Camp Vibes TV - Cumberland Falls State Resort Park

in travel •  7 years ago

Recently I had the privilege of experiencing one of the most beautiful sights of my entire life. The beautiful Cumberland Falls crashing into the frozen Cumberland River! I'm so excited to share this experience with you here and would love to tell you about my journey!

Cumberland Falls is located in the Southeastern portion of the state of Kentucky in the United States. This region is rich in natural beauty but is often overlooked by nature enthusiasts and adventure tourists. This is so unfortunate, Cumberland Falls in particular is such a hidden gem. It's most known for it's amazing "Moonbow!" Yes, I didn't mistype, a moonbow, which is a rainbow at night created when the light of the moon refracts off the mist of the waterfall. Cumberland Falls located near the city of Corbin, KY is one of the few moonbows in the world. This is reason enough to experience the 'Niagara of the South' at least once in your life.

On this particular day we were in luck. The region had been gripped by extremely cold temperatures over the last week which resulted in a large portion of the Cumberland River being frozen over. Luckily the waterfall itself was still flowing, fighting back the ice and creating the beautiful scene from the video. Accessing the falls is actually a very enjoyable experience. The drive through Southern Kentucky is gorgeous as you pass through the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountain Range. Once in Corbin, KY the drive to the falls takes an additional 20 minutes of travel along winding mountain roads as you descend into the Cumberland River Basin. The State Park has a beautiful lodge as well as abundant hiking trails, the most popular being the trail around Cumberland Falls. There is ample parking at the park as well are restroom facilities and a gift shop when you arrive. From there the hike to view the falls is very accessible and only a few 100 meters. There are several vantage points to view the falls from. My favorite being an observation deck very close to the water.

From this viewing platform we were able to get some great shots of the falls, but the best was yet to come. We hiked about a quarter of a kilometer on down the trail to an observation deck that gave us a wonderful birds-eye-view of the falls area. This is where we were able to capture the footage from our video above. At this point we decided to fly our DJI Phantom 4 out over the ice and get as close to the falls as possible. I can't tell you how fun it was capturing this footage, this landscape was what dreams are made of and it was incredible to capture! We swooped down low over the ice and then swept up through the mist of the falls. The drone was soon covered in ice crystals and I feared we might lose it at any point! But we had to get the shot. While filming a large group traveling from all corners of the globe began to gather round to see the footage we were capturing. They were so encouraging and supportive and it was great sharing the incredible view with them!

If you are ever in this part of The United States I definitely encourage you to see Cumberland Falls! The City of Corbin has some excellent local dining and cafe options as well.
