Masada means "fortress" in Hebrew, the language of the Israelis.
Herod's Palace was the last stronghold during the First Jewish-Roman War, which lasted from 66AD to 73AD, ending with the capture of Masada. The resistants committed suicide on top of the mount, seeing no escape nor hope. They chose rather die as free men than to live as slaves.
