Drone video! Hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing New Zealand ⛰️

in travel •  7 years ago

If you visit New Zealand be sure to add this day hike to your list, it is unreal! The national park is home to 3 volcanic peaks and the landscape really is something else. For any Lord of the Rings fans out there this is where you'll find Mount Doom. Tongariro National Park is the oldest in NZ and has dual World Heritage site. Some say this is one of the top 10 day hikes in the world!!! Take a look at the video we put together here (put it in 4K if you can ;) )

Rad footage! I would love to get out there some day! :)

Thank you! I am excited to do it again, next time climbing up Mount Ngauruhoe (Mt. Doom) as well!

Thanks for bringing us Tongariro National Park. Thanks for showing New Zealand. Why its called New Zealand by the way?

You're very welcome! Good question. The Maori (native people of New Zealand) actually call New Zealand Aotearoa which means Land of the Long White Cloud. The name New Zealand comes from the first Dutch explorers to arrive, it was initially called Staten Landt and then a few years later renamed to Nieuw Zeeland. Zeeland is Dutch for “sea land”, and it was named after the provence of Zeeland in the Netherlands. Then a bit later on along came James Cook the English explorer who renamed it to the more english friendly name- New Zealand :)

Ahh just like my country Philippines. It was named after the king of Spain Filipe Segundo.

Very cool! I hope to visit one day :)

Good to know that. Future meetup or steemfest :)

Good job. I think you did good on your transitions, and the balance between the aerial shots, and the ones of you on the ground. Might slow down on the panning speed just a little more. I know it's hard to pan landscapes slow. You did a good job though. What kind of drone do you use?

Thank you :) Still getting used to everything so I appreciate the feedback! We've got a Mavic Pro drone, so far so good!

Exactly what I was gonna ask 'what drone'. the footage is so crisp i felt like i could smell the volcanic ash. you are on your way to becoming a great cinematographer @sunsurfsoul man keep it up

Wow. pretty amazing!

Thanks!

This is an awesome walk to do. I did the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk which takes in most of this walk.

And I did it in snow in Vibram Five Fingers (which are not waterproof!). It's a challenging walk, but well worth the effort. And at the top the rocks are hot enough to warm up cold toes :-)

Oh nice! I look forward to doing more walks around the area. Wholy you are brave haha. I've been told it is absolutely magic when there's snow!!

It was a pretty cool experience (no pun intended).

What was really fun was watching the tourists sliding down on their bottoms because they were wearing street shoes. In my fives I had super grip and could just stroll past, easy. ;-)

Haha! We saw one guy do the crossing in jandals/thongs!!! Couldn't believe it.

Awesome recordings. Keep bringing us adventurous shots!

Thanks! Will do :)
