From lust to the lord - eroticism in Konark temple.

Indian temples are replete with erotic art. However, in a UNESCO world heritage site, the Sun temple at Konark there are thousands of stone sculptures depicting ancient sexual scenes. Most of them are from the 'Kamasutra.'

There are many explanations why the temples depict eroticism. Most locals think the underlying motive is to leave lust behind before one enters the main shrine. Perhaps this is the reason why the images are outside of the temple and not inside. The Gods and Goddesses are never depicted either; only earthlings.

Anyways there are fundamental differences in attitude towards sex in the west and in India, which could be a separate topic of discussion. Then you would always find big fat books on Tantra and Kamasutra adorning shop windows of tourist spots in India. If you are lucky, you could steal the priceless moment of a white couple buying them; feel happy they are taking something home. ;)

Have you traveled to India- seen Konark and Khajuraho? What do you think prompted the sculptors to create these stone carvings?
