My First Day Of My New Life In Australia - Didn't Work Out As Planned

in travel •  8 years ago  (edited)

After 32 hours of traveling I'm finally in Byron Bay, Australia.
Norway has never been this far away!
Things have a funny way of not turning out as planned, so now I'm in an apartment hotel, in a bed, drinking tea with ridiculously amount of sugar in, because I've got no food.

My journey started on Monday when I left my hometown in Norway with a flight to London. From there I went to Dubai. Dubai was an interesting experience. Some hours later I was on my way to Sydney. I got to see a little bit there, as I had to change airports. After some more waiting I crawled aboard a super small plane headed for Ballina.

All grocery stores in Byron are closed, it's dark and pouring down. Plus I'm too jet lagged and tired to go in to the city center to a restaurant.
Tomorrow I'll have to check out at 10 AM and then I'm off to see a house that I can maybe rent for some days.
The apartment that I had rented and paid for went out the window and I had to find another solution quickly. (In respect of the landlord I'll leave out the details.)

It wasn't the best way to start this adventure, but I'll tell you one thing. All Aussies I've met today have been wonderful. First off, I met a very friendly and chatty taxi driver who took me to where I was supposed to live. Driving through the beautiful nature from Ballina to Byron Bay with this awesome retired surfer gave me the best first impression of the country. When my house plans failed, I just started walking with all my luggage towards the main road. I stopped by a small cafe and met the friendliest guy ever. (He was Swedish, but lived here.) At this point I was still in the clothes I wore in Norway, so I was pretty hot, tired and frustrated. Please note that I was carrying around 45 kilos of belonging as well.

This guy told me about a hotel right behind the cafe. He also said he was going to check with his landlord about vacant rooms.

The third super friendly person I met here was the receptionist of the hotel. She was super helpful  and very understanding of my situation, she made me feel very at home at the hotel.

Tomorrow I'll have to get up early to go house hunting. The receptionist told me that it could be difficult to find something to rent. But, worst case scenario is this:

One more night at this wonderful hotel, in this gorgeous town. Life is good - and so are the Aussies.

Best tourguide in the area - based in Grafton - but does stuff in Byron Bay, too.

Ha ha! I will definitely ask around! I need a tour guide, for sure, thanks for your advice.

It's not just any tourguide - The guy is a legend.

I googled him, and you might be right about that! ha ha

It never goes like we expect it to. ; )

It was obviously supposed to be like this. I don't mind a change of plans.

Welcome to Australia @susanne!

sounds like managed to score at least a good nights sleep on top of the good hospitality.

Oh, I am so ready to sleep in this amazing hotel bed. After sitting on planes for such a long time. If this is what Aussies are like, I can never leave this country.

The best of luck Susie! I will keep me updated...

Thank you, my friend! I'll make sure to post annoyingly many pictures from the beaches here..

Thank you so much @gary-smith! Have you been here before?

No but would love to visit, I have friends that lived not far from there in Coffs Harbour

Enjoy Byron, it really is a magical place like no other. Be sure to go up to the lighthouse and try and spot some dolphins or whales :)

I will, thank you. Lighthouse is on my list of activities. Maybe I'll catch a glimpse of a Steemit whale.

Welcome to OZ! J.

Nice house :)

It's the hotel I'm staying at, very lovely indeed. Although I urgently need a more permanent living situation :)

Skjønner, skal du jobbe der siden du har flyttet?

Leve livet og steeme :)
