Phayao is a small and quiet province in the upper northern region. Wat Phra Nang Din is an ancient temple that has been with the people in Phayao for a long time.
Wat means temple
Phra means monk or Buddha statue
Nang means sit
Din means soil or earth or ground
The distinctive feature of Wat Phra Nang Din is that it is a temple where the main Buddha statue does not have a base to support it like the main Buddha statue in other temples.
There is a legend told by the elders that people in the village once built a base and took the Buddha statue to sit on the base, but a miraculous event occurred: lightning struck the middle of the temple three times. Therefore, they let Phra Nang Din be enshrined on the ground as before. That’s why this Buddha statue is called “Phra Nang Din” until today.
At present, the Phra Nang Din is still enshrined in the Ubosot on the floor, with clear crystal glass built to cover it.
Phra Nang Din is magnificent in golden color. It is assumed that this Buddha statue was built when the Lord Buddha was still alive or more than 2,500 years old.
Behind Phra Nang Din, you will see the awesome mural painting of the large bodhi tree which looks outstanding.
Near the Ubosot, there is a pagoda beautifully decorated in Lanna style, decorated in striking gold color.
The area inside the temple is spacious and shaded by large trees which helps the atmosphere look refreshing.
If you visit Phayao, do not miss Wat Phra Nang Din.....
