There are many beautiful temples in Lamphun. Each temple has a long history dating back to the Hariphunchai period. They have beautiful architecture and Buddhist art.
Wat Phra Yuen is one of the important temples in the history of Hariphunchai City, which is more than a thousand years old.
Wat means temple
Phra in this case means Buddha statue
Yuen means standing
Within Wat Phra Yuen, there are several important buildings. The highlight building is the Phra Yuen Chedi (pagoda) which is the place where the bronze Phra Maha Patimakorn or Phra Yuen is enshrined, beautifully standing out in the middle of the chedi.
The chedi is in square shape and the architecture is in the Bagan style. It was built on a raised platform with decreasing levels. The upper circumambulation area has small chedis at each corner.
This Phra Yuen Chedi is considered the most important religious object in the temple.
The Ubosot of Wat Phra Yuen is magnificent. There are mural paintings on the outside wall of the Ubosot which are gorgeous and they can clearly reflect the exquisite art of the past.
The Stone Inscription which was found at Wat Phra Yuen is valuable and can describe well the history of this temple.
If you have the opportunity to travel to the North of Thailand and pay a visit at Wat Phra Yuen, you will be able to experience the valuable art and culture that has been there for a long time since the Hariphunchai period.
It’s worth a visit indeed.
