Bohol is famous for the Chocolate Hills, a formation of over 1000 hills in the middle of the island. But it is also known for pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear water and diverse marine life that attracts many divers. But it is also great for island hopping and snorkeling tours.
Balicasag Island is surrounded by a marine sanctuary and is one the most popular diving and snorkeling spots in Bohol. After a quick stop on the island and switching to smaller boat we were back on the sea heading out to the next reef. Our guide was great an knew exactly where we had to go. Only a few minutes later we arrived, prepared our snorkeling gear and jumped into the shallow water were we immediately spotted the first sea turtle swimming close to the seabed. It was amazing to observe them, and we got really excited to explore more.
Now it was time to move on to the next snorkeling spot near another part of the island. There were already a few other boats floating on the surface with a few tourists swimming in the water around them. As soon as we arrived we jumped in the water and joined them snorkeling. We didn’t see any turtles anymore but there we plenty of different colorful fish all around us and it was fun to swim around between them. Not far from the boat was a cliff going deep down into ocean where you couldn’t see the ground anymore and the water changed its color from a bright turquoise to a dark beautiful blue. Near the cliff we spotted some divers preparing to go down there but for us it was time to move on.
Our next stop was Virgin Island, a beautiful white sand bar in the middle of the ocean. From far you could already see many boats lying on shore and quite a lot of people walking around on the sand, taking photos and enjoying the scenery. There are a few makeshift food stalls where you can buy fresh coconuts, fried bananas and other stuff. If you walk a little further, you get to this beautiful stretch of white sand, it is perfect to relax and to make some jump shots.
We had a great day and a lot of fun. I can only recommend going on an island hopping trip when you are in Bohol. There are plenty of tour operators at Alona Beach where you can book one of these trips or you do that online in advance. Be aware that you might have to pay an environmental or other fees when you arrive at Balicasag Island. These fees are not always included in the tour. We had a private tour that already included all these fees. If you want to see more of our island hopping tour in Bohol, check out the video below.
