You don’t have to travel far to find amazing places. Sure it is exciting and intriguing to travel to distant places all around the world, but there are also many interesting destinations just nearby that might surprise you. We spent the whole summer travelling to different cities not far from us and explored them for just one day. None of these places were further away than one or two hours and we haven’t been to any of them so far.
Freiburg im Breisgau
One destination was Freiburg, a vibrant university city in the Black Forest. It has the most sun hours of any city in Germany and is surrounded by a low mountain range and vineyards. Freiburg is famous for it’s medieval old town with many small brooks, the Freiburger Münster and of course it’s temperate climate.
Ulm
Our next stop was Ulm, another city in the state of Baden Württemberg, situated on the river Danube. Ulm was founded around 850 and as a former free imperial city it is rich in history and traditions. One of these traditions is the Ulmer Fischerstechen or Fishermans Jousting that only takes place every 4 years. The city is well known for the Ulmer Münster, the tallest church in the world, and of course as the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
Strasbourg
Only a few days later we went to Strasbourg, a city in France close the German border, also known as the capital of Europe. It is a young and dynamic city with an old and rich history also as a cultural bridge between France and Germany. Throughout history it changed between the two countries quite a few times and it is amazing to see how these two cultures shaped the face of this amazing city.
As you can see, you don’t always have to travel far to find new and amazing places you haven’t been to before. For me it is always great to go explore new places, whether close or far, there is always something new to discover. These were only 3 of the cities we visited during summer.
