Summer Up at Crater Lake

I was recently going through some of my old travel pics trying to figure out what to share today and came across these! Now these really take me back, as they were taken on my first traveling trip - North American west coast adventure!

Fresh out of Uni I set off with four friends on a road trip to see the incredible natural sites on the west coast. Of course on the route was Crater Lake, Oregon.

Crater lake was formed around 7500 years ago when the volcano Mount Mazama collapsed. With the heavy rain and snow this crater then quickly filled and is now the deepest lake in the US!

There are a couple of islands in Crater lake, however my favourite is Wizard Island!! This island was formed by a second eruption some time after the original collapse.

However what really surprised us was the depth of Snow!!!

Owing to the high elevation, the winters here are savage and allow for enormous snowfalls averaging 505 inches per year (wikipedia). The elevation helps keep it there, and the snow doesn’t normally melt till late July!

I just couldn't believe how much snow in summer!! I mean whats even the point in that building if 3/4's of the year its buried !!
