Travel Indonesia: Gili Trawangan

in travel •  7 years ago

While Bali is super known as major tourist's destination of Indonesia, there are many other islands that are equally and/or more precious than Bali, and even when they aren't that developed by the locals and the government, it is often not unusual to learn foreigners already discovered and owned a piece of those islands and making them as their haven for holidays.

In Lombok, Indonesia, there are 3 islands that today are dubbed as Bali's sisters, and they are the Gilis (Gili Islands) of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air.

The biggest island is Trawangan, the middle is Meno, and the smallest is Air.

When we first came to Gili Trawangan, 20ish years ago, it was very tranquil, white sandy beach, turquoise see-through water, clean and was just developing.

Not many people would stay overnight as there weren't many options to stay, and if you watched Ellen DeGeneres' show when Robbie Margot was sharing a story of her honeymoon staying in a secluded island with no electricity and whatnot, staying at Gili Trawangan back then would be like Robbie Margot's story, but it's very beautiful that you would be okay without electricity nor phone access and whatnot.

Tourists often cross the ocean from Bali to Trawangan by boat as it is cheaper and easier rather than flying to Lombok and then still need to find a boat that would take them to/and from Trawangan.

Huts offering meals were humble but affordable even for local tourists. So were shops with various arts and crafts and boutique, there were a couple, but enough for the not too many tourists.

Today though, Trawangan is very developed, almost no empty areas but line and line of shops, stores, hotels, bakery, and also ATMs. It is geared more to kidless couples or singles.

It's still very much cleaner than Bali (which of course also smaller than Bali so makes sense in a way or two), especially since no transportation with engines are allowed but horse carriage ride.

Going to/and from Trawangan still requires a boat, facilities are plenty, prices are still steep, but if you'd like to enjoy the holidays where you just swim, and snorkel, and swim, and snorkel, with less Aussies accents all over (but Germans and Italians in exchange 😂), visit Trawangan 😊

Note: I do have to mention, prepare to get wet when you travel to and/or from Trawangan or the other two islands, as boats sometimes cannot really dock right on the sandy beach, but a bit to the water, due to corals, but don't worry, they will carry your luggages so you'd just have to worry of yourself 😁
