Marlin and Nemo look-alikes dart in and out of the many anemones fringing the reefs of Nusa Penida, Indonesia.
Clownfish (aka anemonefish) are funny little fish with big attitudes! Immune to the venom of the anemones, clownfish take shelter from the larger fish on the reef while ambushing the smaller fish from the safety of their stinging tentacles.
They also aggressively defend their turf against anyone -- including scuba divers! If you approach clownfish slow enough, they will get right up in your face and may even peck you on the mask. They do have tiny teeth, so make sure not to get your fingers too close!
Did you know that clownfish are hermaphroditic? Clownfish start their lives as males, which act as the caretakers of the eggs for the colony. They have a single mating male/female pair in the colony, and when the female dies the mating male spontaneously turns into a female! The female then selects the next male from the colony to be part of the mating pair, and the cycle repeats...
Disney left out that little bit where Marlin suddenly turns into a woman... maybe in an upcoming sequel: Finding Nemo 3: Finding Marlina!
