When you spend $3 per night on a hostel, you don’t expect anything but a bed. And that was what exactly I was looking for when I booked seven nights at Kif Kif hostel in Marrakesh. A place to sleep at night. Nothing more, nothing less. Unfortunately, what I got was my worst hostel experience so far. Here’s what happened!
It was my first time in Morocco and Marrakech and after a long, long trip including, a 12-hour bus, a night at the airport, two flights, and a quick taste of Morocco, I was finally in Jemaa el-Fnaa the main square in Marrakesh.
For anyone that hasn’t been in Morocco, finding any place located in the Medinas (the old part of a city) is a big challenge! Usually, you have to find a local and give him some money to take you there. However, despite being in the city for the first time, finding Kif Kif hostel was relatively easy.
After 30 minutes I was checking in, not knowing what was coming!
Kif Kif, you SUCK!
Usually, I hate ranting. I prefer turning bad experiences into funny stories. But for this time, I’m sorry, I’m ranting! Let’s begin!
The room: the dorm room was small with no windows or any kind of ventilation. Thus, you guessed, it got really smelly, really quick!
After two or three nights, the light stopped working and the room became totally dark, I couldn’t even tell how many beds were in the there.
No enough sockets, the fan was working 50% of the times, and the mattresses were so damn hard it was like sleeping on the floor (lowkey I kind of like that, but I know that most people would hate it). Of course, security and privacy were like insults to our little room!
Toilets/showers: the entire hostel had three bathrooms, and I think only one of them had a shower! Again, no ventilation or windows, and half of the stuff there didn’t even work. Finally, one morning there was a cat turd next to the toilet. Fun fact: it stayed there for at least half a day(it could’ve been much more).
At least the rooftop was nice!
A few extra points: people were smoking in the common area, it was loud all night, and I saw some reviews of people saying that the owner wouldn’t let them leave unless they gave the hostel a 10/10 review! I can’t guarantee that this true though since I left at 6 am (had to catch a flight) when everyone was sleeping!
Worst hostel experience
Ok, I made it look really bad, but honestly, if that was all I wouldn’t be that mad! Yep, it was bad but there a lot of bad hostels in the world. My biggest problem was the bed bugs (or whatever bugs it was)!
worst hostel
So, after three-four days, a couple of bites appeared close to my elbow. It wasn’t something special, and I thought it was just mosquito bites. Two days later my left hand was full of skin bumps. And when I left the hostel my entire body was covered in these bumps!
My next five days (in Fes) were full of itching and cursing!
Kif Kif is the worst hostel! I ended up going back to Marrakesh and stayed at Dream Kasbah hostel for about $5 per night. Loved this place!
