My First Time In the U.S. – Part III: Jackson Heights, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island Museum, Wall Street and Katz's Delicatessen Legendary Sandwiches

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello my fellow steemians,

Part III of my American Adventures :-)

Today, I will introduce you to the neighborhood I stayed while visiting New York, and also take you with me in one of the world's most visited landmarks. Furthermore, you will have the bright chance to get a taste of the world's "most famous sandwich" as it's also known: Katz's Reuben

Jackson Heights, Queens

Jackson Heights is a quite peaceful neighborhood in the northwestern part of Queens in New York City. Not too far from the "Greek Isle" of Astoria, Jackson Heights is a truly MULTICULTURAL area with a total population of over 110,000 citizens.

Needless to say that the hospitality of my friend was of "Greek Quality" despite her being a "barbarian" (You KNOW I love you LOL). As you see my room was better than any hotel room out there, plus I had free Wi-Fi (at all times) and Netflix (Oh...Yeahhhhhhhh)

I even saw some snow from my room's window one freezing morning...

Cool fact of the day: The building I was staying was opposite Joan of Arc's School...

The streets in the neighborhood were very clean, a fact that truly impressed me! The only "dirt" I could see was leaves from the trees, which made the streets even prettier in my eyes.

Our mornings usually started at the local Starbucks, from where we were heading to the train station usually (when we didn't use the car).

Statue of Liberty

After spending a total nine days in the US, it was time to visit New York's most famous landmark:  The Statue of Liberty. After buying our tickets, I went through the craziest security check in my life. They will literally UNDRESS you before you board on the little boat that takes you to the Statue.

Oh well!!! It was worth it...

Here's a view you won't see often in the postcards or movies...Statue of Liberty's ARSE!!!

Even though it was -7 that morning....F$$$ YEAH!!!!!!

Ellis Island Museum

Next stop: The Ellis Island Museum!

Guess what "nationality luggage" you will see first by entering the museum's door. Yep....GREEK! I really hope Evagelia fulfilled her dreams and had a better life in America.

And because my "Greek Ego" wasn't boosted enough by Evagelia's personal items, the museum's elevator was Greek-themed too. Dammit!!!! Why do we (Greeks) have to be represented EVERYWHERE on this planet? :P

Btw, here's an awesome city view from the museum's second floor...

Wall Street and Katz's Delicatessen Legendary Sandwiches

On our way back home, we also visited Wall Street, but unfortunately I didn't see any "wolves." Just a big bull and AWESOME Ancient Greek architecture.

After WAY TOO MUCH cultural enlightenment and "feeding," it was time to fill our empty stomachs and some real food. For that reason, we visited one of New York's (currently) most urban and trendy areas: Lower East Side.

There, one can find the truly MYTHICAL Katz's Delicatessen Restaurant, which has been serving MILLIONS of hungry "souls" since 1888.

It was a truly emotional moment for me. Until that point, I had spent hours and hours watching on YouTube other people DESTROYING their globally famous Reuben Sandwich. Finally....IT WAS MY TIME!

I witnessed step by step the traditional preparation of the $25 sandwich. Some of the best $25 I've spent in the past few years for that matter...

And voilà!!!! Here was my sandwich :)

After these two photos, I better stop for today as the content will become really inappropriate for your innocent eyes. I sexually abused that damn sandwich!!!

In case you have missed the first two parts, please find them here:

Part II

Fourth and last part of my "American Experience" will follow one of these days (Not sure when exactly to be honest).

It was the most tender meat I have ever eaten in my life. You can literally eat this thing without teeth...gums will do the job (I am not exaggerating)
