Galena, IL - a place you always want to return to

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hi everyone :)

It's not hard to notice we have a perfect summer, favorable weather encourages outdoor activities and is a great way to get out of town. I would like to share my impressions after a one-day trip. Together with family and friends we went to Galena, IL. Just two and half hours outside of Chicago in northwest Illinois, this historic river town boast things to do or see all year long. Our first stop was a scenic overlook where you can enjoy an incredible view that span as far as the eye can see.

The second stop on our way was Ulysses S. Grant Home where we took a guided tour during which we moved a little bit to the past and got to know some history.

This Italianate style house was built in 1860 for Galena City Clerk Alexander Jackson. On August 18th, 1865 this furnished home was presented to Ulysses and Julia Grant as a gift.
In 1868, Grant was elected our 18th President and re-elected in 1872. The Grant's maintained this home as their voting residence until 1881, then moved to New York City to be near two of their children. In 1904, Grant's four children gave the furnished home to the City of Galena with the understanding that it would be kept as a memorial to their father. This historic home, furnished with 90% pieces that belonged to the Grants, is the main attraction for Galena and welcomes about 80,000 visitors each year.
Please see some of the pictures that I took.

Let's explore some more. If that would be your first time in Galena, with its many tightly arranged red brick buildings, you'll likely feel like you've stepped back in time.
As you walk on Main Street you'll see many historic buildings like The DeSoto House opened in 1855. It claims to be Illinois’s oldest operating hotel.

There are many art galleries, studios and pottery shops.

Also you'll find there many dining options from high-end to casual but we've chosen to have a picnic in one of the local park, complete with picnic tables, playground and open area to be active for out kids.

Our main destination was the Great Galena Balloon Race.

Wow, only one day!

Sure. We left in the morning and returned home just before midnight. But it is a great idea to stay overnight or even better for a few days. There is so many things to do and see there. I am planning to go there in the winter.
