The 'White Night'

in travel •  8 years ago  (edited)

La Noche en Blanco or the beginning of the 'White Nights' arts and cultural festival was last night the signal and focus for whole town festivities in the small Spanish town of Alcala la Real. This is set high in the Sierra Sur mountains a little to the north of Granada.

From late evening through to the early hours of the morning the townsfolk and visitors alike partied and participated in the many attractions. Roads were closed to traffic and bars and restaurants did a thriving trade. Even the shops stayed open until 2am.

Events were spread throughout the town with more than ten different locations used for music, heritage and other entertainment.

High on one side of the valley flamenco dancers performed way into the night. Whilst on the opposite side of the valley newly opened caves beneath the mediaeval fortress had tour parties for the first time.

Down below in the old part of town a main street hosted a grand selection of vintage cars and motorcycles. Other places staged classical music performances, lectures and heritage displays

The town hall square was the venue for local and up and coming bands, talented musicians and singers. You may hear of some of these again - Shatter, Stainless, Farandula Vintage, Electric Quartet and Flash. Between them they provided a great variety of music from very talented musicians and artists.

Across the town families and visitors, young and old, often of three or four generations moved between venues and enjoyed themselves. The bars and shops were busy throughout and there was a cheerful and exciting atmosphere. All were more than satisfied with a tremendous evening of fun and entertainment. I, like so many others, set off for home in the early hours with tired legs but feeling relaxed and chilled out. I will be making a note to ensure that I get to be part of this again next year.
