Travelling to Baikal. Part 2: How to get to Lake Baikal

Part 1. Introduction


Baikal is located on the border of two regions of Russia - the Irkutsk Region and the Republic of Buryatia. Therefore, Baikal can be accessed in two ways - through Irkutsk or through Ulan-Ude. Both regions are rightly proud of the sacred lake and are ready to do everything to preserve it.


How to get to Irkutsk

By train. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through Irkutsk and connects the European part of Russia with the Far East. If you go from Moscow, the road will take about 74 hours.

By airplane. In the city there is one of the largest international airports in the east of Russia. Irkutsk is connected by direct airlines with many cities of Russia and Asian countries. The journey from Moscow to Irkutsk is 5 hours.

By car. The federal highway R-255 "Siberia" "Novosibirsk - Kemerovo - Krasnoyarsk - Irkutsk" passes through Irkutsk. Its length is 1860 km.


How to get to Ulan-Ude

By train. The Trans-Siberian Railway also passes through Ulan-Ude. If you go from Moscow, the road will take 82 hours.

By airplane. The international airport "Baikal" is located 15 km west of the city center. Ulan-Ude is connected by direct airlines with large cities of Russia and Asian countries. The journey from Moscow to Ulan-Ude is 6 hours.

The car. The federal highway R-258 "Baikal" "Irkutsk - Ulan-Ude - Chita" passes through Ulan-Ude. Its length is 1113 km.
