Paradise on Earth: Sunset at Santorini, Greece

in travel •  7 years ago

Well, as you all may know, there are a lot of places where you can enjoy the magical hour of the sunset… Yes, like… Everywhere. But there are special places in this world… Places we call Paradises on Earth!

Santorini is one of those places…

Famous for being one of the most romantic places in Greece and in Europe, Santorini attracts thousands of tourists every year. The white houses on the hills, making contrast with the deep blue sea of the Caldera, the traditional small streets of Oia and the sun in the sky are key attractions, as we’ll cover soon here @travelingstories. But there’s one thing that’s even more special at Santorini… The sunset!

Colorful, glamorous, romantic… It’s the perfect place to relax, to hold your loved one’s hands and just enjoy as the sun gives place to the night sky…

And where in Santorini can I enjoy it at its best, you may be asking, Steemians… Well, we’ve got the answer for you: the Oia Castle, a Byzantine Castle in ruins, that sits on the top of a hill, pointing directly to the West and surrounded by white houses and a windmill, making it the best place to enjoy the sunset in Santorini.

Of course, there are other good locations – specially if you prefer quietness instead of the rush of unknown people around you –, such as Thira the island capital, but there… At the castle? Right in the small village of Oia, a place you can’t miss during your stay? You can you bet that sunset it’s going to be something you’ll never forget!

If you’re traveling to Santorini in the super crowded Summer months (as most of you might), make sure to arrive at least two hours BEFORE the sunset! Yes, two hours. It might seem a lot – given that you would be better off just wondering throughout the beautiful, traditional streets of Oia –, but it’s necessary. It’s an attraction and, believe it or not, when we’ve visited this Greek island, it was June and this was the scenario, one hour before the big event…

Later, the surroundings where filled with people…

So, if you really want to have a privileged view to the sunset at Santorini, go to the Oia Castle, but make sure you arrive there well before it… And, hey! Is it even bad to wait for one of the most wonderful shows in Nature?

Seems worth a try! Thanks for the advice :) Do you recommend June as a good month to visit?

Definitely! Less crowded than July and August, the weather is also very good (and not too hot) and the prices are lower. We'll cover more on Santorini and Greece soon, stay tuned! :)

Cool! Thanks
