Top 5: Best Beaches of Kefalonia, Greece

in travel •  7 years ago

Greece is all about magical islands, incredible beaches, amazing food and the sun in the sky! For these reasons and for the fact that there are a ton of cheap flights to Greece and its islands, places like Athens, Santorini, Mykonos and Crete are welcoming more and more tourists every year…

Of course, we @travelingstories strongly recommend those places, but what about that traditional, calm, relaxed atmosphere of Greece…? Well, we’ve got a secret tip for you: visit Kefalonia!

An island located in Western Greece and that we’ll cover more extensively here @travelingstories, Kefalonia is such a special destination, full of incredible places you can explore: ancient castles, charming fishing villages, quiet beaches and beautiful landscape!

In this post, we’ll cover the Top 5 Beaches you can’t simply miss while in Kefalonia, we hope you enjoy it!

  1. Myrtos Beach.

Wait! Is this real?! Has anyone painted the water?!

No, but it’s real! Welcome to Myrtos Beach!

Located in Western Kefalonia, about one hour away from the city of Argostoli by car, this is easily one of the most beautiful beaches in all Greece. White sand, light blue sea, an amazing view to the sunset and easily accessible by car, don’t miss this fantastic gem and enjoy every minute of peace it will certainly give you!

   2.  Antisamos.

Another too-good-to-be-true place… On the opposite side of the Island (in comparison to Mythos Beach), Antisamos is a shingle beach, armored with white pebble that makes a unique contrast with the water, that you can’t just miss on your stay in Kefalonia!

Pictured in the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin, these impressive beach sits on a beautiful bay surrounded by untouched Nature. The beach is very quiet, it has two beach bars side by side and it’s easily reached by car, on a 10 minute ride from Sami – a small town with three beautiful attractions nearby…

We strongly advise you to arrive early to enjoy the sunrise. In alternative, try to arrive at least by noon, since the sun will set earlier due to the mountains surrounding it (probably at 5 p.m. during summer).

   3. Skala.

Looking for a place to just chill out and relax and swim? Skala is the right place for you!

Located in the South of Kefalonia, near the port of Poros – where you can catch the ferry to inland Greece and to the island of Zakynthos (that we’ll cover soon) –, Skala is a major resort destination of this Ionian Island. It takes about one hour by car to get there from Argostoli and you can also use the bus (though we don’t recommend it, because they are always late… We guess it’s just Greece, a place to relax, not to rush :)).

Filled with restaurants, bars, supermarkets, local shops and hotels, Skala is the perfect place to enjoy the summer. The beach is kilometers wide so there won’t be a problem to find the perfect spot for a very good day at the beach.

    4. Petani Beach.

Why is this gem in fourth place? Well, that’s the problem with top: you always have to pick an order…

Petani Beach, located on the West side of Kefalonia, at about 50 minutes ride from Argostoli and from Myrtos Beach, is actually two beaches. Separated each other from a rocky pathway, you can find two very different places: on your right (if you face the sea), you have a beach with sun loungers, beach parasols and two beach bars; on your left, you have a practically deserted beach.

You just got to pick one or, like us @travelingstories, stay at both for a few hours. Oh! And if you’re on the sunset mood (like you would be in Santorini), just wait until the sun goes down!

    5. Foki Beach.

Remember when we started this article? We said the atmosphere was quieter at Kefalonia than at other locations in Greece (like Santorini or Mykonos, for example)… Well, quieter and wilder! Introducing… Foki Beach!

Located in the Northern part of the island of Kefalonia, near a lovely fishing village (Fiskardo – that we’ll cover soon), this beach is just incredible! Surrounded by trees and mountains, with crystal-clear water on a bay where some yachts stop, this is the place that’ll make you feel free and relaxed for the day!

And that’s all for now on the best beaches of the beautiful island of Kefalonia! Stay tuned, we’ll be posting more and more about it, about Greece and other amazing locations you’ll want to visit!
