TRAVELMAN in CAMBODIA: Travelman eats a Tarantula!

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

I fulfilled a childhood dream of eating a giant poisonous spider! ...Now I just have to check off becoming a Rock Star-Astronaut (I wonder if I can find that at a food cart as well?).

I’d searched all over Chang Mai one night and never found the bug guy. I got to eat a cricket on the slowboat to Laos. But a cricket, although still a bug, is not a big, scary poisonous bug. I needed to go all the way.

So when I stumbled upon this bug guy a couple afternoons ago, I had to go for it.

I asked the bug guy which tasted best. He said the tarantula. I’ll have to take his word for it. He told me the rear-end of it was the best because it’s where the oh so sweet eggs can be found! Yum.

But all the other options looked so tasty as well.

I asked bug guy to take a video of the momentous moment...

Ok, so a few things about bug guy’s camera work. First point, it needs work. He buried the lead! This video is about ME! It’s all about Travelman eating a bug! How does Travelman look as he first tastes the egg sac of a tarantula? We’ll never know! Because bug guy was more interested in his bug!

Imagine bug guy doing the camera work for the winning kick in overtime of the Super Bowl...

“And the ball is snapped, good hold, the kick is up! ...And let’s stay on those shoes the kicker is wearing. What are those? Nikes? Nice color he chose. We’re just going to hold on the shoes here for a few more moments. ...Oh, the kick? Yeah, it was good.”

I guess I can’t blame bug guy for being dedicated to his product.

The tarantula taste? There was more texture than taste, really. Although the mere thought of what I’d eaten made me slightly nauseated for the next hour. I did not finish my meal. I tried to give it away back at the hostel...

TRAVELMAN’S TRAVEL TIP NO. 55: Offering people in your hostel leftover tarantula is not the number one method of befriending said people of the hostel.

Just got back to Bangkok tonight, but have two more posts about Cambodia coming- A bike ride and Angkor Wat/a steemit meetup.

Oh my god...😖 I get the heebee-jeebees just looking at it!

You know, funny thing... There was a cart right next to it selling fried heebee-jeebees.

😂 😂 😂

Hope you survive... :))

It’s been three days. I think I’m good.

THAT HASHTAG nutrition ...
Did you forced yourself to give a thumbs up at the end of the video? Because your face says otherwise. :p

and luckily it's a fried one, so it's easier to be eaten I guess?
If it's soft and juicy I think I would freak out watching you eating them.

I made myself laugh when I tagged it with nutrition.

Facial expressions eating the tarantula in the video are saying everything.
Bangkok must be absolutely boring, come back here and let's hang out :)

Going to Kanchanaburi tomorrow morning. Yes, Bangkok is boring, but feels weirdly similar to home, since it’s where I started this trip.

Your videographer commentary is A+. "It's not too horrible..." hahaha. Definitely would have taken a bite of the leftovers, inflicting extreme foods on others is half the fun!

Yeah, not exactly a glowing review of gourmet tarantula, huh? LOL. “Not too horrible.” I couldn’t believe it when bug guy tilted the camera down to his bug, it was so funny. It’s not about your bug! I mean, it is, but we’re selling Travelman, not tarantulas! Sheez.

As a vegan and a Westerner this disturbs me on multiple levels.

It disturbed I as well.

I'm not brave enough for that. Crickets are about as far as I'd go! Nicely done :)

Thank you. The cricket was salty. The tarantula was... bad.
