I went Glacier Kayaking in Tasman Lake, New Zealand!

in travel •  7 years ago

I'm not positive, but it seems to me the ground was made bare quite recently, as there is no vegetation and it looks unstable. And if the ice were to start to melt, it would most likely collapse into the water.
Nice shot. Am I right in assuming that the ice levels were up to the sheer face just above the water but has melted thanks to global warming?
Ya, our guide had been going tours there since the 1980’s. He told us the lake was formed around 1973 and the glacier has been retreating around 180 meters a year since the early 1990’s. I read online global warming has made that number significantly higher in the recent years.
It looks so tranquil!
