Chicano Pride in Hidden Fort Worth Park

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

Took Ms. Barkley on a walk in Fort Worth's Southside. Found this little park, Jennings-May St. Louis Park, hidden under the Berry St. overpass. It's covered all over with Chicano murals.

They literally got the jungle gym under the bridge! There's some swings, picnic tables, and benches, too. The old turn-around under the bridge is fenced off from car traffic.

In 2013, high school art students repainted the then graffitied park with murals. The concrete slope under the bridge's got Aztec warriors, jaguars, Queztacoatl, and that Mexican eagle with the rattler in its mouth (same as the Mexican flag, and an old Aztec legend). The pillars are painted, too, with trees and jungle animals.

No, I don't rightly expect European tourists to flood the Southside. Still, it was a cool thing to run into!
