The beauties of Bulgaria Part 1 - Wonderful bridges

in travel •  7 years ago

Wonderful bridges are a rock phenomenon located in the karst valley of the Erkupriya River in the Western Rhodopes at 1450 m above sea level, at the foot of Goliam Persenk Peak . Bridges have been formed as a result of the erosive activity of the great river in the past, which has transformed cracks in the marbles into a deep water cave whose ceiling over time tapering down and collapsing. It is assumed that the debris from the collapse was subsequently taken away by the river waters.

As a result, the two famous marble bridges remained . The large is about 15 m wide in the wider parts, almost 100 m long. It consists of three arches, the largest being 45 m high and 40 m wide. The small bridge is 200 m from the big river - impassable, 60 m long, with a total height of 50 m, and only the arch - 30 m. Next to it there is a very small third bridge, which is a meadow cave in which the Erkupriya waters disappear to return to the surface after 3 km.

Near the rock phenomenon there are many caves, but most of them are not suitable for visits by tourists because they are not illuminated and secured. Nearby are the chalets "Wonderful bridges" and "Rock bridges", run by tourist company "Studenets" - Chepelare (possible places for tourism and overnight).

Wonderful bridges are among the 100 national tourist sites , the Bulgarian Tourist Union : number 85 - peak Golyam Perelik , nature landmark "Wonderful bridges", there is a seal.

Awesome real evidence of a great flood at the ending of the ice age 13K + years ago. To think levels there were 1450 m higher is incredible.
thanks for sharing :)

Your first picture is amazing. I was looking for some hobbits in there :)

To my disappointment I did not see a hobbit there :D
