Traditional Transylvanian Gates in Székelyudvarhely

While we were traveling through Transylvania, I saw many traditional Transylvanian gates in front of houses.

These gates are made of wood and are carved beautifully.

This morning I walked on the street of our hotel in Székelyudvarhely and took pictures of several of these gates.

Here is one of the biggest:

On the top, this sentence in Hungarian is carved across:

  • Traveler, if you are tired on the road of life, enter through this gate with trust - If your intentions are good, you will be welcome.

And above the small door, another inscription says:

  • Made with God's help by Istvan Sandor and his wife Magdolna Miklos. 1991

And here is a more modest one, with the inscription: Wine - Wheat - Peace!

While walking to photograph these gates, I saw this guy:

You don't need a lawn-mower if you have a scythe!

This other one was made in 1856:

Just near our hotel Boróka Panzió, there are two of these gates.

This will interest Mette. She once made a series of small amulets/boxes based on the round doors of Beijing.

This looks such an amazing place! I have never been and see it would be worth the trip. I love gates and fences and garden boundaries. They are the bones and structure of a place and these are so well thought out and highly decorated. Lovely indeed.
