Slavonia – The Land of Castles
Croatia is one of the top tourist countries in Europe, particularly due to its beautiful coast and islands. But not many people know that Croatia has many other destinations worth visiting and Slavonia is definitively one of them.
Why Slavonia?
Slavonia is the northern province of Croatia, situated between three countries: Serbia, Hungary and Bosnia, and three rivers: Dunav, Drava and Sava. Its fertile land defined it as the nation's granary, but it is also famous for its spectacular cuisine and wines. People who have already visited Slavonia are particularly delighted with local specialities called "Kulen" which is a sort of a preserved meat.
What is more, visiting Slavonia will be a unique experience since one can catch a sight of rare Croatian species. For instance, you can see Slavonic famous Lipicaner Horse Breed, which is among the most beautiful horses worldwide. In addition, what makes Slavonia so unique is its historical heritage which will leave you breathless.
The Land of Castles
Slavonia had a turbulent past since it was the Austrian frontier to the Ottoman Empire. That is why many castles were built to provide protection during many wars between the two great Empires. Castle Prandau - Norman is one of the best and most beautiful examples of medieval fortifications in this area. It was originally erected in the late 15th century, and it was expanded a few times later. You can find it near the city of Valpovo, and it will be a good example of how noble people from this area used to live. Castle Tikves is another great destination, especially since it is located in an enormous national resort Kopački Rit where you can also visit a ZOO. Castle itself was built in the 19th century, and it was used as a summer house and hunting lodge. Jugoslavian President Josip Broz Tito also loved the place and used to spend a lot of time there.
Noblemen's Favourite
Slavonia used to attract nobles from all around the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire. Hence, many famous families have erected here their grand manors that still draw imagination of all people who visit them. Famous Hungarian noble family Esterhazy used to have manors in Knezevo, and it can still be seen as well as manors of other families in Vukovar and Virovitica.
Shrines and Cathedrals
Pilgrimages from all over the world regularly come to visit some of the famous religious centres located in Slavonia. Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul located in historical city of Djakovo is definitively the top destination every person should also visit. But there are also much smaller but equally important places that are worth going to such as The Shrine of the Lady of Sanctuary in Aljmaš or The Shrine of the Lady on Water in Ilaca.
Natural Phenomenon
Slavonia's nature is something that makes the whole region exceptional. There are many natural areas one should take the time to visit such as the famous Whirlpools in Otok. We still don't know why they show up, but they enhance its astonishing surroundings even more. Namely, Otok is a unique natural habitat for many species which live only in this area. Those who enjoy hunting should go to Spacva Forest, not so far from the Whirlpools. Hunters from whole Europe probably already know this destination, but it is also a beautiful spot for people who love hiking or biking.
Slavonia is a great place to visit at any time of year especially for those who are into activity packed vacation. One thing is for sure - visiting Slavonia means you will never be bored, and moreover you will gain new experience, knowledge, learn even more about tradition and history. So, why not do all of this?
I've got to visit some time!
