Taxidermy and skulls at the Evolution store

in travel •  7 years ago

Flashback to our adventures in NoHo. While @kommienezuspadt was photographing Grace Church, I was exploring the shops down Broadway. My mission: find an awesome shirt for the nephew.

On my walk, I spotted a large skull banner which caught my attention. I saw the words skulls and taxidermy, two things that fall into my line of interests. I snapped a photo, making note to stop by when I circle back.

With a little spring in my step, I made my way back towards the Evolution store. I had successfully found a shirt for the nephew and two for me so I was free to browse leisurely. I hadn’t heard a peep from @kommienezuspadt so I figured he was still busy photographing the church.

I walked in to see a very clean, organized shop. There were wicker baskets filled with shells, fossils and minerals. Shadow boxes with pinned insects and numerous horned animals mounted on the walls.

I would’ve loved to bring several of the larger items home with me but that wouldn’t be practical. Especially with all the travel and a child who enjoys tinkering with fragile items.

The prices were within reason, so I took my time searching for small gifts for @guthrie and his dad. It had to be something that I could easily conceal in my bag to surprise them.

I saw some dinosaur teeth and meteor rocks that I knew they’d both like but they weren’t exactly calling to me.

Ugh, it would’ve been so cool to get a box filled with these lovely critters.

I ended up getting @kommienezuspadt two skulls. One of a fruit bat another of a black beaked bird. I don’t recall it’s name so I’ll have to search that later. I got @guthrie a Thai dung beetle.

If you’re ever in New York then I suggest that you make a quick stop to the Evolution store!

Thanks for stopping by!🦊

I definitely want to check this out next time I'm in NYC! @donvee would love it

It was really cool!! They had interesting specimens in jars 😍 so awesome!

I was just in a gallery with a bunch of bone art stuff. It would be an interesting medium to work with. Haha

I think simplicity is best. Not sure how I feel about dressed up skulls.

I just discovered this store today! I was meeting up with a friend from college in the city and on the way to Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, we stumbled upon this shop. It was so cool.

Yes! I’m so excited for you! The butterflies and pinned beetles were my favorite in that shop. It’s funny how you’re the only one here on Steemit that knows about the stores I’ve visited since it’s your neck of the woods. Bummer that we didn’t get to meet but maybe next time!

I just think it's funny that out of all the stores in Manhattan we went to the same ones. It means we have the same taste in things XD But yeah, totally!

We totally do! I may be out on the East Coast again, near the fall. If not then there’s always next year. :D

Wow what a beautiful and eccentric store. I like it a lot and I would have browsed it if I'm in NY.

I wonder if you ever show your photos to the owners of the shop / restaurant you've visited, foxchan? Because the photos look so enticing and they certainly invite me to visit or eat at the places you've been.

I remember the animation that you made about some food being made.... yumm <3.

It’s incredible in person! I’ve visited establishments with similar items before but non as organized and stocked full with various items! It got me excited. :)

I’ve never shown any of the shop or restaurant owners, I figure they’ll see it somehow if I mention the name because it’s the internet. XD

Yay! You also love the animations! I’ve been wanting to share more food and general travel animations but they haven’t been loading for me. I don’t know why. I may have to test it again with my next post.

In the pictures there were many interesting things! But it is as you say it would not be a surprise if you realized what you bought, but still hope you like what you chose for them :)

They were both really happy! The little one was surprised by the beetle, asking if it was REAL and then making a disgusted face! 😄

Always interestin to look a things from the past...it makes you feel like a survivor...and I hope that you found the shirt.

Thank you! I did find it. :)

How do I get so far behind! Four days ago! And I love this.

Oh how I love bones and taxidermy and such, I always have. It's more accepted and kind of chic now, but it wasn't always and would sometimes get odd stares when people would see a bone or a little jar of parts setting about in my decor or in my studio.

I want to go here. The next time I'm in London I'm thinking of doing a taxidermy course, as they have a really cool one at the old Charles Dickens house I believe.

So wonderful! Now, to catch up with your posts!

I’ve seen videos and short clips of the process with taxidermy, it looks really difficult from what I remember. It would be awesome for you to take the course and share step-by-step images of your work. I’d definitely check it out because it’s all so fascinating!

Oh and yes, oddities are in style now but I know that my parents would still find it weird. 😆
