Known as Lutetia, Paris was conquered by Julius Caesar in 52 BC and existed as a regional center under the Romans and in the early Middle Ages. In 987 A.D. Hugh Capet became king of France, and under his descendants, the city’s position as the nation’s capital became established.
Under the leadership of Etienne Marcel in 1355-1358, the people of Paris declared themselves an independent commune.
The storming of the Bastille in 1789 was the first of a series of main actions by the Parisian people during the French revolution. In 1871, during the Franco-Russian War, the city was under siege for four months until France yielded.
During World War II the Germans occupied the city from 1940 to 1944.

Climate

As Paris is located in Western Europe, it has a maritime climate. The summers are warm and the winters cool, but due to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, the weather doesn’t change dramatically. During the winter temperature rarely drops below freezing. The best time to visit Paris is during July and August when the average temperature is around 20°C.

Getting around the city

The best way to get around is by Métro combined with some walking. Due to traffic reaching some parts of the city may seem impossible by foot only. One way ticket costs roughly around few € and allows you to reach most parts of the city. Traffic in Paris is dense and renting a car is not a viable option. It’s always exciting to experience the city by foot, and there are numerous walking tours around Paris, whether self-guided or with a touring. The city is best explored by foot, and some of the most marvelous memories you will have of Paris is walking through secret found places, and stopping at numerous cafés and shops.

Things to do

There’s always something to do in Paris. The best way to experience Paris is to visit all the city’s museums. They can be crowded during holiday season and the affordable Paris Museum Pass allows you to skip lines and enter all museums free of charge. This can be useful when the lines extend hundreds of meters. There is also much more to do, there are countless possibilities. Paris is packed with shops, theatres, and events. And getting to know French cuisine is a must.

Safety concerns

Paris is a large but safe city. Most of the crime consists of pickpocketing and scams. Violent crime is uncommon. Pickpockets usually hang around crowded tourist areas and on the route from the airport to city central. Don’t participate in any card games held by con artists around Eiffel Tower and on bridges of River Seine, you will always lose. Also avoiding illegal taxis is advisable wherever you travel.
