Manistee National Forest
Free Soil, Michigan

Mosquitoes have been plaguing my campsites every night since I've been in the forest here. I finally got off my lazy butt and took action to alleviate the problem. I needed to pick up some supplies at Walmart in Ludington and picked up some tulle fabric or netting to affix to my SUV windows so I could allow some airflow in my sleeping compartment. I do have a tent, but my preference is to car camp out of convenience. The mosquitoes require me to hole up before temperatures are comfortable with my windows shut right typically around 8, well before sunset and dusk. It might be as much as five degrees warmer than the outside temperatures in the vehicle. It's gotten gradually warmer each evening from the low 70s to the mid and high 70s at about the time the mosquitos arrive. I have to be careful when opening and closing my doors to not allow those little vampires inside. I usually spend an hour, while waiting for temperatures to be comfortable, killing the ones that sneak inside each day. They like to go in my vehicle even during the daytime hours to hide and then appear to pester me until I kill them all.

My idea worked great, but I only had enough magnetic strips to attach the netting to my two rear windows. At least it's a start after waiting all these days to be proactive.

I also bought some natural repellant to spray directly on my skin, not liking that deet that is in most of the repellants. So I could cook in the evening hours, I decided to try out a citronella candle as well. It didn't stop them, but their numbers have greatly diminished to a tolerable level at least. It's 9 o'clock and well after sundown as I type this on my smartphone now able to be outside. Seems my measures worked. Hope this helps for anyone else that's lazy like me.

Peace. Love and Vanarchy,

Tulle on the windows is a great idea! I have found that citronella helps, but it works best when there is little to no wind (of course, strong winds usually keep the little buggers away anyways).

I always tough it out until I can't take it anymore. Procrastination problem. Good thing i didn't procrastinate on traveling though. :)
