Hostels are fun. Hostel prices not so much.
And even though hostels give you the opportunity to meet lots of new people and party your ass off, after a while it's all the same. Same questions, same conversations over and over and over. "Where are you from?" "Where are you going next?" "How long have you been traveling for?" "Can you recoment...or is it too touristy?" Bla bla bla...if you stay in a hostel, you ARE a tourist.
If you don't want to be a tourist, you need to see the city through the eyes of a local and that just doesn't work in a Hostel. For that, you need to meet locals, have conversations with them and let them show you, what this place is all about.
Best way to do so: Couchsurfing
Who ever invented Couchsurfing, invented in my opinion one of the greatest things out there. It is a platform, on which you can request locals to stay with them. To sleep on their Couch. As simply as that. Basically like a hostel, but without paying money.
ITS GREAT.
The thing about Couchsurfing, which a lot and I mean a loooot of people dont understand is, just because you dont pay money, it doesn't mean this service is free. It's a give and a take.
Hosts and surfer do it equally for the cultural exchange. Both want to meet people with a different heritage, learn and widen their horizon.
So lets sum this up:
Your goal is to do multiple tourist attractions, party or just relax and enjoy the city on your own. You might just need a bed to crash? Take a hostel or a hotel or an Airbnb.
Your goal is to get to know a new culture, a different way of living. You want to meet locals, have deep conversations, passionate discussions and explore all the hidden spots the city has to offer. If you want to make real friends all over the world. Then Couchsurf!

I totally agree. Many of my best travel experiences were with couch surfing hosts. Those hostel questions get exhausting afyer a while.
