I invite you to one (I hope that out of the many) of my trips to Greece. This time I wanted to invite you to the Greek mountains. I think I can say so about both places I visited and want to show you, one of which took us to the Olympics. Mountain massif overlooking the Olympic Riviera.
It is believed that Olympus is a single mountain. That is not true. It is a long mountain massif and there is no summit with this name. The highest peak of the massif is Mitikas - 2918 meters. What is abnormal for me is that I went to the mountains by coach and not just on foot, or at most with the help of a mountain lift or chairlift. Interestingly enough, the Greeks do not go out to this mountain, they somehow do not have it in tradition. They consider her to be a "mountain" of gods and apparently do not want to disturb their peace of mind. Tourists do this already happen, after leaving for the shelter (on 1100 meters) it is still 5 hours on foot one way to the highest of the peaks.
I would be happy to do so, but not this time, we did not have time for it. We went on an easy way. The bus brought us to the picturesque town of Litochoro, and then we took a small walk (2.5 km) to the Enipeas river ravine.
I had to believe the guide's word - the rivers could not be seen anywhere. See yourself on the picture..... .... everywhere grass... Only a small spring was found at the end of the ravine.
Unfortunately, we didn't get a bit of the weather either, there was no air transparency, so I don't boast the view from the shelter to the riviera.
On the second trip we had no weather problems any more, unless the excess sun was considered as such.... We went to the mountainous regions of Greece. There are certainly many people who associate themselves with Greece, namely Meteors.
A trip to Meteor, traditionally starting from visiting the icon workshop, we visited Dimitris Zervopoulos' workshop. Sitting off the bus we could already see a substitute of what we were supposed to see.
The Greek word Meteora can be translated as monasteries suspended in heaven. The monks built 24 of them there, and they have survived to this day. He cannot imagine how they built them, since the access to most rocks was completely inaccessible.
One of the monasteries called the Great Meteoro, we visited, going out on hundreds of stairs.
It was worthwhile to get tired of the beautiful views. Remember Bond in "Just for your eyes", as Roger Moore climbs up the vertical rock of one of the monasters? See the picture, it's a puzzling feat..... But the view is amazing. They make such a huge impression. Then, centuries ago, I had stomach problems. The friars served me with Metaxa, and since then I have been very fond of this Greek alcohol.
However, Greece is above all a sea. I was also enchanted by the evening, at a beautiful sunset. Peaceful waves, silence on the beach. Heaven full of stars, almost empty.... Greece is not only a wonderful holiday, but also money everywhere.
Each trip costs a lot. The Athens I wrote about recently for an adult was as much as 65 euros (including a ticket to the Acropolis of 20 euros). Olympics and Meteors cost a lot of money. However, it is worth not to buy blindly in your travel agency. It is worth comparing prices or/and bargaining. We were a little too late for it, but on a cheap trip to the Olympus we saved 5 Euros per person. And I am sure we have not lost anything. We also had a Polish guide, and we also took food from our hotel on the road. We even had the idea of not buying excursions but just renting a car for 2 days for a couple of people and going for excursions. However, our pilot's handset has effectively scared us off, which is supposedly almost impossible and so expensive. The next time we rent a car, we will take care of it in Poland a lot in advance.
I hope that I have been able to encourage at least a little bit to go to Greece. You have to see the meteors, and if you like mountain hiking it is worth going to Mitikas.
What a beautiful country. Thanks for taking me along. I'd like to make it there so I can experience it in person.
