Fort Zachary Taylor State Park - Key West, FL - Civil and Spanish-American War Historic Site

in travel •  7 years ago

This was an interesting site in Key West. It was used in both the American Civil War and the Spanish-American War. The fort has definitely seen better days and much of it is in need of restoration. There is a lot of history here. You can see areas where it has been damaged by cannon fire.

You can see old cannons throughout the fort, and places where others would have been. There is a lower level and a top level that looks out on the ocean. The most interesting thing I remember was seeing the names and messages cut into the brick walls by the men who served here. It is an eerie reminder of lives past and now passed on.

This site has a lot of walking involved, and this is a hot place in the summer time. So bring water and wear good shoes. It also has stairs to get to the upper level. If you like old historic forts, this is definitely a place you would want to visit. The photos are ones I took on our trip there.
