Do You Want to Live in a UFO?

in travel •  7 years ago

Hello again my Steemit friends! I am currently having some down time working out my travel route for the next few months so today I am going to write about a place I visited in November.

I mentioned in my introduction post that I love exploring abandoned places and Taipei, Taiwan is a great place to do that.

In the Wanli District, northeast New Taipei City, there is an abandonded beach resort that is home to a set of Futuro Houses. In 1968, Finnish architect Matti Suuronen designed the Futuro House to be used as ski cabins all over the world. The houses were prefabricated UFO-shaped structures that could be airlifted to resorts all over the world.

We had heard about this abandoned resort from a friend and decided to check it out. It was a rainy day and the gray skies added to the feeling we were entering another world as we made the short walk to the beach.

There are six Futuro Houses in the park area. You can see the yellow of the houses dotting the landscape as you enter the beach area.

The first one we came across was the only house of the six we were able to enter.

Inside we found some of the original furniture.

The other houses are boarded up or missing stairs but still interesting to look at from the outside.

There are also several Venturo Houses. They were also designed by Suuronen but did not have the same popularity as the Furturo Houses.

But we explored inside those ones as well!

We spent over an hour walking amongst all the different buildings and taking photos. I loved seeing the styles from the 1970s and the feeling of being surrounded by UFOs. If you are in Taipei and love exploring abandoned places I definitely suggest checking the Futuro Houses out!

I had a local friend from Taiwan drive to the resort but it is also accessible by public transit. Take bus 1815 from Taipei Bus Station heading to Wanli and tell the driver you want to get off just before Yehliu Geopark. The houses are just past the Howard Greenbay Resort Hotel.

Thanks for reading and see you again soon!
