A Roman aristocratic household
The Domvs Romana museum in Rabat surrounds the remains of a Roman aristocratic household. Dating back to the 1st century BC, the original site boasted a colonnaded peristyle inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece and contained Mosaics in the Hellenistic style depicting scenes from mythology. During the 11th century, the Fatimid Caliphate repurposed the area as a Muslim cemetery. Today the museum, which was founded in 1882 shortly after archaeologists discovered the site, displays the remains of mosaics and statues as well as artefacts collected from across Malta.
A Maltese heritage
The Museum structure is hailed as the first building in Malta purpose built for the conservation of archaeological remains and has been subject to alteration over the years. The current facade was the product of architect Galizia’s 1922 project to extend the museum. Unfortunately, restoration work which began in the late 20th Century caused significant damage to the original mosaics. Since then, Heritage Malta has embarked on restoration projects to rectify the damage.
Open Monday to Sunday from 09:00-17:00, tickets come in at € 6 for adults, € 4.50 for youths and senior citizens and € 3 for Children. Infants under 5 years enter free of charge and the museum is just a few paces from the Rabat bus terminus which passes from the most popular routes.
