Originally known as Suk-Heem, which means "peaceful home" in the local language, Sikkim was an independent state until 1974, when it became a part of the Republic of India. The capital of Sikkim is Gangtok, which is located approximately 185 kilometers away from the nearest railway station of New Jalpaiguri for Sikkim. However, an airport in Deccalink of Eastern Sikkim is under construction, the closest airport for Sikkim will be Bagdogra. Sikkim is considered a country of orchids and mystic cultures and color traditions. Sikkim is very popular among trekkers and adventure lovers, because West Sikkim has a lot to offer them.

In places near Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kalimpong are known as the queen of the mountains. Darjeeling is famous for its refined "preparatory school" established during the British Raj, in addition to its famous "Darjeeling Tea" around the world. Kalimpong is also famous for the cultivation of its flora and is home to many internationally renowned nurses.
