In Larnaca as well as in other cities and villages of Cyprus, cats feel very good. It’s just the Cats’ Kingdom. During a week in Cyprus I saw only a couple of dogs and an army of cats. This army is friendly or at least allows tourists to bring pet food.
Under the legend cats helped local inhabitants to fight against snakes. It happened in the beginning of the IV century. That's why they are respected.
There is so called “cat's monastery” on the island. It is the female monastery of St. Nicholas now. The monks from this monastery took care of cats during their fight against snakes.
