Travel around the island of Crete. Matala.

Today I decided to tell and show my summer trip to the island of Crete. Long-distance post I have not enough patience to write, so I decided to break the story into several small parts.

As we are independent, quite English-speaking and incredibly active, we decided to rent a car, because it's not possible to visit lots of places besides Heraklion. At first glance, the task seemed elementary, but the first few attempts to rent a car showed that in the high season there are a lot of such active ones. As a result, I spent about four hours trying to find a suitable car.

I was lucky enough to rent a brand new Peugeot 208 with a diesel engine a little more than for 100 euros for 6 days. The only photo of our car, I can find in front of you (it is right there in the center):

So, Matala. What do we know about this place? This is a small village in the south of the island, a tourist place, where it is lots of people on the beach like in Russian Yalta. I heard that according to one of the ancient Greek legends, Zeus brought there some woman. But what he did with her I don't know. May be some one know about it?

Also in the 60s hippies from all over the world came here, especially the Americans who were hiding from conscription during the Vietnam War. In the mountains there are many small caves in which they lived. In the same caves for a while hippo and such famous personalities as Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. The caves have survived until now, they can be seen in the following photo:

Now these caves are fenced off and for the passage to them you have to pay 2 euros per person, although we for some reason went for 3 euros together. Well, since the place has become famous, you can find the attributes inherent hippie culture and reggae music.

Like a lot of Russians, we, after watching the program "Orel and Reshka", went to the restaurant "Hakuna Matata", where I was watching the evening surf and eating very tasty ice cream.
