Dianchi Lake was called Nanze of Yunnan in ancient times, also known as Kunming Lake. There are four theories about the origin of the name of Dianchi Lake. According to records of Huayang state and records of nanzhong by Chang Yu of Jin Dynasty, Dianchi Lake is called Dianchi Lake because it is "shallow and narrow, like backflow" This is in terms of geography. Another way of saying is to find out the meaning of pronunciation and consider "Dian people, Dian also." Some people think it's "dian" in Yi language, which means "dabazi". The third way of saying is to research from the national appellation. According to the historical records of Southwest Yi biography, "dian", in ancient times, is the largest tribal name in this area (DI Qiang "sou", "Bo" or "tanrong"). After entering Yunnan, Zhuang Qiao of Chu became the king of Dian, so there were Dianchi tribes before Dianchi. The fourth view is that "dian" is the "Pavilion" or "Temple" in Zhuang language, which refers to the location of the ancestral hall.
Dianchi Lake is the largest lake in Southwest China and the sixth largest freshwater lake in China. The drainage area (excluding the drainage area of rivers below Haikou) is 2920 square kilometers. The Dianchi Lake is 40 kilometers long (including Caohai) from north to South (about 32 kilometers long in a word); it is 7 kilometers wide from east to West on average and 12.5 kilometers wide at the widest point. The lake is 1886 meters above sea level, with a coastline of about 150 kilometers. In the north of the lake, there is a barrier sand dam that stretches from east to west, 3.5km long and 300m wide. The east end is connected with Panlong River Delta, and the west end extends into Dianchi Lake. The south of Haigeng is called the open sea, which is the main part of Dianchi Lake, with an area of 289.065 square kilometers accounting for 97.2% of the total area of Dianchi Lake; the north of Haigeng is called the inner sea, also known as Caohai, with an area of about 10 square kilometers. The average depth of Dianchi Lake is about 5 meters, and the deepest depth is about 8 meters. The grass sea in the north is shallow, only more than 1 meter deep.

Kunming Dianchi also has a very good friend - "Seagull". Every winter, red billed seagulls from Siberia come to Dianchi Lake for winter with the change of seasons. They come from November every year and leave for Siberia in March next year.
