Switzerland travel series - part 1 Schaffhausen

in traveldigest •  6 years ago  (edited)

Have you ever been to Switzerland? No? No worries! In this series I will take you with me to my favorite places in this country. I will try to update the series on a weekly basis. I hope you will be inspired to visit this beautiful place on earth.

I am going to start this project with a city where I spent more than 5 years.

Schaffhausen is the capital of the canton with the same name. It is situated in the north of Switzerland at the border with Germany.

The city is dominated by a majestic fortress Munot that was built in the 16th century. It is surrounded by vineyards and serves as the symbol of the city

Canton Schaffhausen is located on the right bank of Rhine with one exception but I will talk about it in the next series. The houses and the forest in the back of the picture are on the left bank of Rhine. This is part of Canton Zurich. I have always found it interesting that crossing of a bridge will bring you a different town in a different canton.

How do you like the view to the old city dominated by the evangelical reformed church?

What you probably don't know is that the large parts of the city were destroyed by bombing on 1st of April 1944 even though Switzerland was a neutral country during World War II. As Schaffhausen is situated on the right bank of the river it was assumed to be a German city. Many people died during this devastating bombing and there were also very serious damages to the properties. Schaffhausen got reimbursed for this incident and renovated the city completely.

The vineyards are beautiful during this time of the year.

The Rhine river is a natural border of canton Schaffhausen. On the other side of the river is canton Zurich. If you walk along the riverbank you will reach Germany in less than 15 minutes, just take this path 😊

There are so many boats on the river. Switzerland doesn't have any access to the sea but Swiss don't mind. They enjoy swimming and sailing in many of their crystal clear rivers and lakes.

On the way back to the city you will see Munot on the top of the hill again.

There are plenty of fountains in the old town that are dedicated to a different historical figure or an event that happened in the past. Don't be afraid to drink out of the fountains in Schaffhausen. The water is safe to drink and it's very refreshing during hot summer days.

I can't find the name of this fountain. If you happen to know it, let me know 😊

The city center is well preserved with many beautifully painted houses.

House of large cage - in early days there was a large tower used as a cage. Nowadays we can enjoy the stunning painting on the building.

The most intricate fresco, praising the civil virtues, is the one on the "Haus zum Ritter" or House of the knight. Originally it was done by Tobias Stimmer, a Swiss Artist born in Schaffhausen in 1539. To preserve his work, the frescoes were taken off the façade and can now be seen in the "Museum zu Allerheiligen" (Klosterstrasse 16). The Artist Carl Roesch of nearby Diessenhofen recreated them masterfully on the "Haus zum Ritter". (https://www.swissvistas.com/schaffhausen-travel-guide.html)

The last but not least to mention is the Abbey and Museum Allerheiligen. This is the most spiritual place in the city. We go there almost every Sunday just to sit on a bench and listen to the birds.

You can see dozens of medicinal plants, herbs and flowers in the Herb garden which is a part of the monastery garden. There are so many of herbs that I have never seen before. It is definitely worth to visit.

Nice post and nice pictures. Looking forward for the "laussane lake posts"

Thank you! :) They will be coming towards end of summer I think. I live in the German part so will cover it first :) French part will be the next one :)

Wow! What a tour... I tried to remember some of the scenes and places from the time I was there but I guess that was too long ago... Wonderful tour though! Cheers!!

Thank you! At least now you could see it on the pictures again :) Have you traveled in Switzerland or have you spent time only in Schaffhausen?

Reminds me of when I lived nearby in the Black Forest for 5 years, as you did the same time length. I miss that part of the world and would love to live in Switzerland near Lauterbrunnen but that is near impossible. :) look forward to more of your posts about Switzerland.

Where do you live now? I still live in Switzerland, just moved away from Schaffhausen to a small town nearby. Oh, I love Black Forest. It's a horrible place to drive but it's beautiful :)

I am in Australia now where I come from. You are lucky to live in Switzerland and I look forward to more of your posts showing me where you are. I used to live in Freiburg and worked in Loerrach so I went into Basel daily. It is a great part of the world.

I am totally amazed my Dear...........not only Switzerland is a beautiful place, you did a wonderful job presenting it. Congratulations!!!

Thank you so much Lena!! I am so happy for this! Also thank you for resteeming my article! You are so supportive, I can't even thank you enough!

You can use some formats. Here is a post by @espoem https://steemit.com/utopian-io/@espoem/make-your-posts-look-great-in-steemit-and-busy. You can try working with them next post.

There is so much to say about this tour. The hills are alive with the sound of music was playing in my head upon seeing your photos. On your second photo, I noticed the cloud and the top portion of vine looked like a tree. Great eye.

The fountains remind me of water pump we call "poso" and you can drink straight from them too at least in most of the places in the lowlands here in our country where I went to high school to. It's amazing that you can drink straight from the fountains. Everything about this place is historical - museum, fountains, fresco, architecture.

You can't even imagine how surprised I was yesterday. My husband told me that he didn't see me that excited for many years :D well, yesterday I really had a reason to jump up and down :D and it's all because of such great supporters like you!!!

Thank you for the article! I was already thinking how to make my posts look better. I will definitely read it and try to put the advice in the practice.

Also, thank you for your great comment on my post! Oh, the city and the hills are so beautiful. It's not difficult to take some nice pictures in such an amazing place.

Good to know that I can drink from poso when I'm in Philippines :)

Lol! I can almost imagine your reaction.

It's not difficult to take some nice pictures in such an amazing place.

I would give up taking photos and just soak it in. There is just a lot of things to see and visit.
