Reminiscing the important event in the past that molded the country to where it is now gives a vital information for the millennials of today of their ancestors who were fighting for a reason. Even though, nobody wins in a civil war - it will just inflict destruction but if there is no other choice rather than make the country in turmoil then I think the end will justify the means.

I agree. It is important to remember the past. No one wins during war and it was very moving at the end whem taps was played as a respect to all of those lost on both sides.

This really is a great way for them to be remembered. People from all over the country travel to watch the reenactment and the people from the area come everyone year to honor their ancestors that took part in these battles.

Looks like a damn good time and when you mentioned the guy storming out of his tent to share his whiskey I couldn't contain my laughter. I'm more impressed with the amount of pictures you've taken of all the people. And more impressive than that is all of these people are wearing authentic clothing and sticking to their parts, I truly believed the first couple pictures were actually from the battle I was baffled. Hope soon I can find one of these reenactments, seems like a trippie experience as if you were back in time. Great post!

Great pictures!

But i wonder how a real survivor would think about a "reenactment" of a pretty cruel battle where his friends and comrades died besides him and he still suffers from nightmares and so on.

I wonder how "cool" it would be to reenact a battle like the battle of verdun or so...

Well considering a vast majority of these people involved are veterans and some even combat vets from various wars and me being a combat vet myself, I can assure you that everything done at the reenactment was done with the utmost respect for our lost brothers in arms. I am sure that they are looking down and they are proud to have their memories relived in this way. I think it is a great way to honor these men and all veterans I know would agree with me.

I think the reenactments are good. I am also a combat veteran I believe that it reminds us of the history of this country and also reminds us where we came from and where we are today. It is an honor to them I believe that we remind ourselves through this that we need to be one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

@neutronenkind I can understand where you are coming from and your concern is amazing! Everyone copes with the death of comrades and the nightmares that are left behind differently but that is just how grief is. There is no real way to cope, only to accept it and try to deal with the loss the best you can without ever forgetting what happened. When you lose someone it can feel like a part of your soul is ripped away. But, sometimes it really does help to remember what happened and to honor those that have been lost. And it does a great service to the families of those that have given their lives in service to their country. I have been told by family members of the fallen that it helps them to understand what happened in those final moments and brings them a sense of peace. Based upon the reenactments that I have seen done in the past, they are very respectful in the way they conduct themselves and the experience is sobering for those that watch. I feel like the reenactments educate people that have never seen battle before and make it more real. Sometimes there is a disconnect between what you see on the news and it doesn't feel real if you watch a firefight onscreen. It comes off feeling like television and like it was staged even though it was real and it actually happened. And there is a saying that if we don't educate ourselves on history then we are doomed to repeat it so maybe by watching the reenactments we will not be doomed to repeat the past. I feel like this is an excellent way to honor those that lost their lives and to remember that it really did happen.

Both buglers played Taps back and forth across the battlefield that was littered with the dead of both sides.

This would have been a very surreal moment.

Thank you for taking the time to post pictures you are taking along the way of your civil war trip. Traveling and posting is quite the multitasking.

Interested to hear what you learn about The War of Rights on your trip and if your viewpoint was the same or changed in regard to the historical reasons behind the war.

This is truly a wonderful post, @derangedvisions. Congratulations on that and also the Curie vote! :-) I'm no admirer of war or warfare, but what you witnessed, and let us witness with you, was beautiful. Here's where I felt so much warmth, even if war itself is cold:

Most of them even have rips in their clothing that they have not sewn because they say that it adds to the character.

and

They told me that the troops had specific rations that they carried with them during battle and that over the course of the next few days they were going to stick to the rations that the soldiers were allowed.

make me go "wow, the love and care these people pour into this... I love that!" And it is matched by the love and care you poured into this post. I'm grateful to heven been able to witness this; I think this is the closest we can come to "keeping history alive", literally :-)

Wow, what a fantastic post. The photos are just amazing. Some of them look like they could have been shot back in time. Should do a colourize treatment on them. Love the commentary. I've seen a few reenactments in and around Gettysburg when I was a kid. I was in awe at that time.

These people look like they did really well in acting their characters. Your pictures show how it could have been for them, seeing their emotions in their faces.

It was more of a sobering experience since i have lost friends in battle, but to know that these were Americans doing these to one another was what makes it the hardest to think about. If you haven't watched the video yet, i would recommend it because the ending is my favorite. It was an emotional way to end the whole experience.

Great article in every regard. I love the dedication these guys have even just to show up. It always astounds me when I read about the re-enactments and the sheer amount of effort involved. I've definitely added seeing one (or more) of these to my travels in future.
