A Visit to the New Forest, South of England

in travelfeed •  6 years ago  (edited)

I visited a friend recently who lives near the New Forest, the national park in the South of England which covers Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. Horses, ponies, donkeys and cattle can be seen roaming freely on the open heathland. They are owned by the New Forest Commoners and the 'roaming free' tradition has been around for years.

We parked up to take a few photographs of some donkeys walking through the village. It wasn't long before they strolled over to our car. We found ourselves getting up close and personal with the donkeys. I thought they were trying to get into the car at one point!

Sadly, a lot of the animals get killed on the roads because drivers don't take care while driving. Why anyone would want to drive fast through a lovely part of the country is beyond me.

Every year the animals are checked over for any health issues and wormed.

There is also a deer sanctuary at Bolderwood but sadly we didn't get to see them on the day. There's lots of activities that you can do in the area, walking, horse riding, bird watching, cycling, camping and holidaying.

There are a few villages around the New Forest area, Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Burley, Lymington, Beaulieu, Milford on Sea to name but a few. All are interesting to visit in their own right so there is plenty to do. The weather wasn't too great but seeing the donkeys made up for it. Hopefully, one day I will return to do a bit of camping in the area.
