Australia to St Petersburg | Australia to Санкт-Петербург - Any advice is welcome

in travelfeed •  5 years ago

Russia is probably as antithetical to Australia as a place can be and, even for a couple of seasoned travellers like myself and Faith, thinking about going there leaves us feeling a little uneasy. I'm not worried about the FSB picking us up and interrogating us before sending us to a Siberian Gulag facility however it's Russia you know? It's not like I'm off to the California or something right? It's Россия!

I speak four languages fluently: Australian, English, American and the international language of love and can speak a little French and Italian but nope, no Russian. Not a word. Despite that we would really love to go there and are hoping that 2020 will be the year we get to do so. We have heard it's amazing and want to find out for ourselves! Image above courtesy of @tarazkp

We are heading back to Europe in 2020 with the main purpose being to see @smallsteps, @tarazkp and @momone. (Wouldn't mind also meeting some other steem-users if they are around there also - Yep, I'm probably as strange in real life as my blog makes me seem - But I'm fun) Anyway, we'll fly from here to Europe and spend 4-5 days in Vienna or Amsterdam before heading over to Finland to spend some time with my family there - Two brothers, two sister in-laws, two nieces and the other associated people I know there. We intend to do a side trip from Finland and were thinking Estonia or somewhere like that although would dearly love to go to St Petersburg if we can make it work.

The city of some five million people is considered the cultural centre of Russia and as far as I can tell offers up a lot of beautiful architecture, museums, art, parks, gardens and white-night festivities in the Summer months. I've heard that it dazzles and I'm bloody intrigued!

The city is apparently colloquially known as Piter I believe however has also been known as Petrograd and Leningrad before its original name, St Petersburg, was restored in 1991 - Thankfully. The name speaks of grandeur and elegance. It's also called Venice of the north and names like that punctuated by stunning imagery on the interwebs...Well, what's not to like?!

The intention would be to take a train from Helsinki, a trip of around three and a half hours I believe. This would allow us to see some sights along the way and as we would probably be travelling with my family me and @smallsteps could raise some hell in the train on the way! Not enough for the FSB to take notice though. I think we could take a boat as well which might solve some accommodation issues once there I suppose. Decisions, decisions.

My brother and sister in-law have been there already so I assume have some idea on the whole process . I'm pretty sure, as my wife and I travel on Australian passports, we have to obtain tourist visa's to get into Russia, allowing us between 1 and 30 days in the country; This is done here in Australia through the Russian Embassy. It involves application and then an invitation to visit Russia by the government and then the process begins. I'm pretty certain it won't be a problem...I mean it's me right? The g-man! Who wouldn't want me in their country?

So, I'm currently in talks with my brother about our plans and what is possible and what is not. I'm hoping St Petersburg works out and will be really excited if it does. Still, if we don't make it Tallin will be just as good - No FSB there I think.

I was hoping someone in St Petersburg might see this post and weigh in with some information, things to see and do, places to eat and the like. It would be handy to have an insiders perspective. From what I've read the people in St Petersburg are generally welcoming, friendly and happy to see tourists - Correct me if I am wrong in that assumption and they are in fact grumpy and rude. (I don't think that's the case though.) If you live there, or have visited, please feel free to hit me up with some intel and if you know someone there that may not see this blog please tag them. All help will be greatly appreciated and I will reward those that do with my gratitude and good-energy.

Here in Australia I have met no one who has been to Russia and whilst bragging rights are a good motivation I don't really care too much about that. I look for experiences in life, things that make my heart sing and put a smile on my face which happens a lot in real life and not so much in photographs. St Petersburg is on my hit list and places that make that list usually get a visit from the g-man and his girl so...Санкт-Петербург, Россия keep an eye out around June/July 2020, the Aussie's are coming!

I know what you mean.
We were also a bit apprehensive about visiting Moscow last year, but I have to say that it exceeded our expectations by a huge margin. It really is one of the most amazing and beautiful cities in the world. We felt perfectly safe and had a fantastic time travelling with a 1 year old (which is not easy anywhere).
I've posted about our trip if you want to look back in my feed to July last year.
Definitely go for it!

Hey, thanks mate, I'll scroll back and have a look. From what I've been told the people are very friendly in general and we are really looking forward to going.

It is a beautiful city and reminds me of Paris, just a little more rundown, but they are renovating a lot. I am hoping that we will be able to do it by train, if not there is always the boat as well, so we can do that and stay there three days I think without a visa. Will have to look into it more :)

We should be okay there as while I don't speak Italian or French - I speak the other four too.

Looking forward to it! Really hope St Petersburg works out.

Figured you knew the same 4 languages as me...Plus you know 1 or 2 Finnish words too!

Posted using Partiko Android

terve!! hehe, no, I dont know 4 languages, you beat me to this. just a bit of Latin, that I had at uni, and forgot long ago.
ps. Tallinn is a sick excuse to Petersberg, ofc, its a tourist city, but doesnt wort it to count as a worthy replacement.

St Petersburg is our goal and I'm pretty sure we can make it happen. We'll be so close in Finland so it makes sense. We love travelling so everywhere is on our list of places to go! Would love to tick Piter off the list.

ps. if you'd like, I could tag you in some of my photo posts dedicated to the city (I use to take part in wednesdaywalks with tattoedjay), sometimes it brings a perspective.

also, may I ask a specific question - you used tag 'travelfeed' in your post, is it better than simply 'travel' (which I used to rely on)?..

Please tag me - Was going to follow you anyway.

I'm not sure about the viability of the #travelfeed thing. I think the tag has a following and so tagging it exposes the post to more people. I use it sometimes and just #travel other times. I'm only a small account and need as much exposure as I can get so I use it.

we all lill fishes :) I added you in discord, it easy to communicate there... the other local steemians I know, except madlenfox, are @bambuka (he is a wood carver and photo-passion, a person with intresting inner world) and @tatdt, she is like Cartie Bresson, living on the streets and chronographs the city life. more or less, her blog is about the city.

btw, june-july is perfect time period - in terms of good weather, because of the famous 'white nights', etc. it wouldnt be exxageration to say it is the peak of the tourist season here. and not the least, in the start of the summer my job provides me more time, which does matter.

well... I am bad at long-term planning, but I'll be looking forward!

I intended to add absolutely the same words as my friend @madlenfox did.
Located at St.Petersburg, love the city, have rather fluent english and be extremely happy to guide you - at least a few days, to a few locations, and provide you with some info.

I mainly concerned with its history, its architectural follies and beauties, its myths. I am not too bothered with its modern life, so probably cant provide you with super actual info 'where to eat' and the sorts :)

I do know three good steemians who share with me this place. I would pray your plans work well and you be able to make way from Helsinky to Piter (yes, I prefer using this unofficial name too!). A little steem-meetup will be inevitable, then, hehe. All the best!

Hey there, yes how cool would a steem meet up be? My Russian is terrible, I know how to say vodka and that's it, but I'm sure we'll communicate somehow! English probably although I prefer to speak Australian like all good Aussies! 😂

We have monthly meet ups here in Adelaide, Australia - My home town so an Australia-Russia one would be really cool and what better place than Piter?

Thanks for your offer of help, I'm sure I will hit you up for some help at some stage.

I appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to reach out.

That's great, @qwerrie ! I am sure that we will be able to show the best that is in our city :))

...and protect from FBI :=)

No problem! You can always get my help! I'm from St. Petersburg :)). Any questions, doubts, etc. - all this can be solved and thought through in advance.
Forget the myths about the FSB. They have other concerns. It's just scary stories, nothing more.
I am very happy to answer any questions about my city and show a lot of interesting sights. Especially here in St. Petersburg there are other very friendly Steemians. I think it could be fun. :))

I was going to mention you, as you're the only person I know from St. Petersburg, and here you are!

Thanks my friend! I really try to watch and not miss all the amazing Steemians who are going to visit our beautiful city.
I was once lucky enough to have a walk and a few hours of communication with the good guys @elmetro from Luxembourg and @siavach from Strasbourg who visited St. Petersburg in 2017. So I hope it will be another nice meeting with the guys from another continent :)).
At the 2018 world Cup, many people from different countries were pleasantly surprised by how friendly we were to them in our city, that Russian people are very kind and hospitable. It dispelled many wrong myths about us :))

If we go I'd like to hook up. My brother @tarazkp would likely be with us as well as @momone and @smallsteps...Enough for a party. (No vodka for smallsteps though!)

Posted using Partiko Android

Oh, @elmetro ! I remember You with great warmth in my heart, my friends! I hope that You will be able to repeat such a visit again. I will be glad to meet You in St. Petersburg :))

Why thank you! Yeah, I reckon the FSB would not worry about an Aussie boy from the bush like me, bigger fish to fry.

Thanks for the offer, any information would come in handy! Your city looks beautiful and I'm so keen to get there and have a look around. I'm sure I'll have questions for you...Thanks for stopping by and for your kind offer of help. Much appreciated.

Posted using Partiko Android

@galenkp, feel free to ask me anytime if there are questions (in Discord my nick is the same).
If you need help with any kind of information: accommodation, apartments or hotel, meals depending on Your preferences (if I understand correctly that Your wife prefers vegetarian food - there is no problem with this), any preferences for attractions ( I can show or sort on any popular and rare exclusive routes ( some are not even listed in the guidebooks for foreign tourists). It all depends on the number of days that You are ready to spend in our city :))

Sounds like a good plan. Once we know if we can make it I'm sure I'll be asking some questions. Thanks again for your offer of help. Much appreciated.

All of the Russian people I have met were kind, friendly and oh-so-helpful. I actually took a train from Poland as I was visiting there and it was quite cheap. Just do it! You won't be disappointed!

Lol🤣

Posted using Partiko Android

I hope you get to go! That would be so amazing! I would love to see all the pictures I'm sure you would take.

It would be pretty cool huh? I reckon Russia needs some Aussie inside of her...Umm, that didn't come out as well in writing as it sounded in my head. 🤣

Posted using Partiko Android

Hahahaha! Why does this keep happening to us? Last time it was STDs.

Posted using Partiko Android

I don't know...Must be you...In real life I'm a smooth mofo, here, not so much. 😂

Posted using Partiko Android

I refuse to believe it's my fault! It has to be you. 😂

Posted using Partiko Android

Well, let's just say you're to blame and call it even huh?

Posted using Partiko Android

That sounds fair.

Posted using Partiko Android

Probably not fair...😅
