I wish they would have taken my passport. Or even my wallet. Anything but my phone or laptop, please. A couple of days ago, my phone got stolen...
...which I mentioned very briefly yesterday in my post.
I feel a little heartbroken, to be honest. A stolen phone or laptop is one of the most heartless acts of theft I can think of. It’s just the meanest thing you can do to someone!
Honestly!
You know what’s crazy, too? People who steal phones probably just want to resell them for $.
Don’t they realize that the person they stole from is their target market?!?
I would GLADLY pay more than my phone is worth to get it back. I’d be the biggest paying customer. Some people call that ransom...
...but I guess I’m ok with that.
I wish I had been given an opportunity to buy my phone back. I’d eat ramen for a month to make up for it (so much for being healthy).
I know it's just a phone... but phones nowadays are everything. They're like an extension of your soul. They’re like the electronic manifestation of your very being.
They're like your best friend. In fact, I loved mine so much, that I named it! Felicia was her name. And when she got taken away it was like:
Phones hold all of your photos, videos, your memories. Your to-do lists. Your google authenticator (this is literally the freakiest part of all of it).
My phone is the only camera I have. It’s the only way that I create content for steemit and it’s the only way I can keep making crappy videos.
My phone is how I get notified when you guys are trying to talk to me, or you’re making interesting posts. I try to back mine up pretty often onto an external hard drive...
...but sometimes life just gets in the way.
So, what do you do when your phone is stolen and you’re not going back to the US (or your home country) any time soon?
That’s a great question.
If I were a normal person who didn’t need google authenticator for like a million websites, then it wouldn’t be such a big deal.
This article right here [INSERT GOOGLE AUTH article) says you can have a backup code for google authenticator so that if something like this happens, you’ll be covered.
I don’t understand this article. I never saw any “backup” area and I have NO idea how to secure goole authenticator. So, unfortunately, that item just sat on my to-do list for awhile.
Now it is on my list of regrets.
If your phone isn’t currently stolen, and there’s still some hope for you, download the app “Authy” if you use google authenticator. It’s easier to recover your stuff if something is stolen or whatever.
The main thing is verifying myself. I need the sim card that was in the phone with my US number.
There are no AT&T stores in Asia, so I can’t just get my US # back. I can get a Vietnamese # easy, but that will probably have the opposite effect of what I want, which is to be verified with google authenticator, NOT mistaken for an Asian hacker.
So.
What to do.
I’m going to try several things and then document the process for you, and let you know what works and what doesn’t work.
Here Are Some Of My Ideas So Far
1) Get someone on my phone plan from back home to meet someone from Craigslist or Offerup at the AT&T store.
Then, buy the used phone from them. Get someone who works at the store to activate a new sim card and put it in the phone. If that person is trusted, you can try google authenticator over the phone.
Now, this is kinda scary because what if you test it out on a site like, I don’t know, Coinbase for example, and then Coinbase is like “Wtf? How are you logging in from the US on your phone and then logging in from Vietnam at the same time?
Account blocked.
Also, we will not be here to assist you because customer support isn’t really our thing, yet.”
Well I tried it, actually, and I got past step 1.
But now I’m dealing with getting my ID constantly rejected. They might also not accept me because I’m residing in a foreign country while my address is in the US. I guess they haven’t heard of digital nomads or remote workers, yet.
If I can’t get into my stuff, I may just have to fly back to the US so I can be “verified.” Doesn’t that seem ridiculous and dramatic???
Do you know of a better way?!?
This is what I meant when I said stealing someone’s phone or laptop is one of the cruelest things you can steal. I wasn’t planning on going back to the US until next year maybe.
Now I may have to go back within a week. On top of that, I may have to pay for a SUPER expensive last minute plane ticket.
The people who stole this have NO idea what trouble they’ve caused, nor do they care.
But it makes my heart hurt so much to know that I may have to end my trip early because of this. I’ve been working towards this trip for 4 years.
I wish they had looked to me as their #1 buyer. They obviously don’t understand supply and demand and how it works. My demand is greater than anyone else...
...therefore I’d pay more to get it back.
Man, if anyone else’s phone been stolen, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. They could have just gotten a new one in Vietnam and used a Vietnamese # for awhile.
But when you have important things on there, it’s a game changer. I really feel devastated. But, I’m going to try to find a solution, that hopefully doesn’t mean I have to resort to that.
2) Have person send me the activated sim card from home in the mail, buy an unlocked phone here.
Receiving mail is a crapshoot overseas. You have a little bit of better chances with FedEx or something, but TRUST me. It’s not 100% guaranteed. I know this from debit card drama I’m dealing with right now.
My bank is awesome (Charles Schwab) and sent it to me in Hanoi, but for some reason it got sent back. On top of that, if it DID make it through, there’s a HIGH chance that customs would charge me bribe $ to get it through the door.
3) Fly home and feel sad, but wear a banana suit while doing it to make myself feel a little better.
Some Tips To Prevent Some Of The Hassle
Leave your US sim card somewhere secure/separate from your phone...
...that way you can be identified through your own phone # and don’t have to fly back to the US if the mail doesn’t arrive.
You can use your foreign simcard and still use whatsapp and any app you need with the foreign number. No need to have US sim card in your phone while overseas. I used whatsapp with Vietnamese sim and people were messaging my US #.
I was somehow still getting messages.
I only had to switch sims sometimes, to get a verification text message or something.
This one’s crazy, but maybe travel with a backup phone and keep it separate from your other one. Have a clear copy of your license somewhere. Coinbase doesn’t accept US passports as ID verification. My photo id has a sticker on it (the DMV’s ghetto way of saying I changed addresses), and now I may not be able to get verified again from overseas. I wish I had a picture of my pre-sticker version, but I don’t. Not having success getting verified.
Has something like this ever happened to you before? Do you have any ideas that I haven’t thought of? Please let me know in the comments below!
I’ll let you know what I end up doing and what works. Hopefully it’s resolved sooner rather than later, so that I can just update this article.
P.S. I just want to say, don't let a stolen phone affect how you view Vietnam! It could honestly happen anywhere. On the same day it got stolen, I also had an amazing experience with a lot of random Vietnamese locals who gave me food and drinks, so there is also beautiful hospitality here as well!
You could probably get a used or even new phone for pretty cheap. I think you should still be able to sign into Google and get your apps back. You could also call AT&T.

I called AT&T and said it was stolen. I'm looking for a new one, they're actually more expensive in Vietnam than in the US. But I HOPE you're right about google authenticator because so far, I'm on the struggle bus and it terrifies me!
I'll update on what happens!

Here in Vzla you can get phones for cheaper if you buy from local sites like https://mercadolibre.com.ve
People sell at USD value, so if it costs $100, they charge you for the phone just around $100 in bolivars, but they can charge a bit more. However, you can usually bargain with them because it's really hard to sell when everybody is so poor.
And additionally, when the bolivar gets devaluated a lot, they usually lag a bit in getting the price back up, so if you manage to get people to sell during a dollar price hike, you can get better prices.

oooo mercadolibre jaja is it weird that I've shopped on there? I know a local site here is lazada.vn but I should maybe ask a local if they know of something better. I've heard sketch stories of people not receiving packages from there because some sellers are shady.
Not just the vn version, but all of lazada as a whole (they have thai and indonesian versions also).

Yeah, you have to be extra careful to use the proper places where the locals get their stuff, and to make sure that you get the info from locals who don't usually get scammed themselves. :P
In Mercadolibre, you usually do a little check on people's reputation on the site and you usually have to go get what you purchased on site by yourself, since the mailing system is not that trustable either.

Kinda, all the streets and houses have names instead of numbers, so you go like
Calle El Roble, Casa El Angelito, Urbanización Santa Mónica, Caracas, Distrito Federal
Then you have people wandering all around Santa Mónica asking where the hell is a street named El Roble, and when, finally, they find it, there are two houses called El Angelito, but the right one doesn't have the name out so they deliver it to the wrong one.
But that's not the main problem but the fact that there are a big big lot of scams here, and not only that, but accidents, theft and for international deliveries, the ones that steal from the packages are the Custom guards, if even they let you bring the packages without bribing them.

that is no longer possible, because now they charge everything in dollars, in fact the websites now place the prices directly in dollars, for example https://www.melopo.com and the same mercadolibre if you see in the comments they are all prices in dollars

What if, instead of flying back home, you buy a short flight to a neighboring country. Then you can buy a new phone at the Duty-Free shop. I bought my phone in the Airport in Quito and the prices seemed about the same as in America. I think I remember seeing phones at the Hanoi Duty-Free, but I'm not sure. It's probably worth researching this a little before trying it.
Or maybe it's possible to have a friend/family member buy you a phone from Amazon and then mail it to you? I mention Amazon because they sell unlocked phones in America now (they didn't a few years ago when I was looking for a new one). Your unlocked phone will work with an AT&T sim card when/if you go back to the States.
Either way, I'd use this as an excuse to end your AT&T contract. If you don't plan on being in the States for a year or two, it seems like a waste to keep paying AT&T. Or do they have good international rates on data/calls? I always used an unlocked phone and local prepaid sim cards (I do the same in America too, only pay $24 a month for more calls and data than I can use).
Losing my phone was one of my top nightmares when I was traveling. I hope you'll be looking back and laughing about this situation very soon!

Wow, I've never heard the duty-free shop thing before! I just figured I need to buy a used phone for sure, because prices for a decent phone are definitely way higher. I wish they had American prices for phones here.
Definitely debating the Amazon/ebay thing...I actually got one off of Craigslist, BUT I'm not sure if I want to risk sending it. I guess we could always get the package insured...hopefully it would cover the cost of a phone. I may just have to send my friend to the post office to check.
I agree about the AT&T...that's actually on my to-do list and I wish I did it before leaving. I'm only keeping it for my phone # because I've had it for 15 years and it's attached to all of my verification stuff.
When I go home next, I'll just put my old # on a google voice number. I tried to do it here, but apparently you can only do it from the US.
Wait, what company do you use in the US that's only $24? DEFINITELY ditching ATT now! Lol wow thanks for that tip, that's AMAZING info!!! I also use local sim cards. I have to switch them back and forth sometimes...and well ok, in Indonesia I never needed one so I never got one.
But I love overseas phone bills because they're usually between $5-$10/month.
Thank you!!

It's quite an interesting offer. I currently pay 15€ for unlimited calls and roaming Europe+USA+Canada with 15Gb/month.
This one is more expensive but offers unlimited 4G with extra countries!
However USA is not in their list, surprisingly… Do you know @fronttowardenemy if it's included too?

I'm not sure how they deal with roaming. I'd be very surprised if the data/call rates were the same as in the US. I had their sim card when I went back to Vietnam, but I didn't even try it. I just bought a local sim card when I arrived.

:( This is my least favourite thing of Venezuela. I've gotten my phone stolen three times and I haven't even bought one in a year and a half because I got sick of getting mugged all the time for it.
The problem is now I can't even talk through Whatsapp with my family abroads, which is most of my family, and that's sad.
I had used all my savings, 300 USD, in order to buy a nice phone to spoil myself a little, since I had been depressed for a while, and it really worked for the little two months that it lasted. Then I got robbed and didn't have enough money to buy a new one.
Now I do have money but it's hard-earned money and I don't feel like getting a phone and probably getting it stolen from me again is going to make me feel better, so I just choose to save and maybe get a new phone if ever I leave Venezuela.
Some tips from here, since people have to deal with getting their phones stolen all the time, is to get little phones, what we call "pote" or "perol". You carry that around and use it when you're out, and leave your big phone at home if it's too precious to lose while you're hanging out at dangerous places.
My friend also used to carry around a big smartphone that was damaged, it had exploded in his face, lol, but it looked OK from the outside. A thief once came to rob him and he just handed him the damaged one while the normal one was in his backpack.
Other little tips to avoid getting mugged for your phone are not putting it anywhere visible anytime, not taking it out while on the street or in public places where people could follow you out and rob you later, not looking foreign (oops), not looking weak or lost or walking alone...
I'm still very hurt from when I got my phone stolen last year. I still only have about 400 USD from savings and I have a few debts to pay off before being able to buy a new phone, so it's stings deep in my heart that someone would be so inconsiderate as to take my only little bit of happiness away in order to sell it for maybe 40 USD at some random black market.

My phone was stolen recently in Mexico. I used Google Auth for signing into my google accounts and Coinbase. I bought a new phone with a mexican number so that definitely complicated things like my uber account and signing in with google authenticator. Had to change my Whatsapp number too.
Getting into my google accounts wasn't too big of a deal. They have a pretty easy recovery process for that.
Coinbase is a different story. I put in a request telling them I'd lost my phone and phone number and I kept getting the wrong info back from them. So frustrating. Finally I called their customer support number and immediately got a real person on the phone who helped me. I was surprised. They told me that since I didnt have the "secret seed code" for Google Authenticator I would have to make a new Coinbase account and have my funds transferred over from my old one. So now I'm in the process of getting my new account authorized.
Call their support number on their website. They have a toll-free number which means you can call it for free from overseas using Skype as long as you have a good internet connection.

omg thanks for this!!!!! This is so helpful and makes me feel a little more calm because yes, coinbase and all that is what freaks me out. Oh and bittrex and all that jazz. Did you have to get into those types of accounts too?
I'm so glad to FINALLY hear a good story about Coinbase customer support. If you go on Reddit and read about it...you'll just straight up have a panic attack lol.
YAY for companies who actually have a toll-free #!!! Charles Schwab has one, and let me tell you, they are hands down the best bank I've used for traveling.
One time, when I lived in Guatemala, I bought some stuff from a Chinese website (for my ecomm business...nothing out of the usual, just the same type of purchase I always do) but for some reason my bank at the time shut down my card. They didn't even e-mail me first to ask if it was me, they just straight shut it down.
Then they couldn't mail me a new one because my address was like "the yellow house on yellow brick road down the street from the volano" or whatever hahaha some vague sketchy address like that.
I've had banks do a lot of rando things.
Schwab though was super helpful because of the fact that they actually had a toll free number, and because they mailed me my card overseas! They mailed it out to me 3x and it FINALLY got here yesterday.
But the fact that hey did that and they are easy to deal with is so helpful. PLUS no atm fees!!! I save a lot of $ with them. Lol, your toll free comment started my Schwab speel, hah sorry.
Thanks for this info!!!!
P.S. Also, maybe try the app "authy" apparently it's easier than google auth for getting back but idk, sounds like it was smooth for you!

I am really sorry about your phone. I can understand how much that hurts and how bad it makes one feel. Your phone has a lot of your memories there and it hurts how much it means nothing to those who steal it and for those whom they sell it too. They will wipe it in a single swoop like it means nothing.
wait for me darling, coming with a new phone and we are creating memories together...again. Right there and then, we can do our 5 before moving to Qatar.
A friend's phone @allasyummyfood got stolen too in Barcelona and they even left her with load of phone call bills before she could make her complaint. It is always very hurtful.

So far I had the chance not to have an issue with my phone.
However I have a second mobile with me with no contact where I can install apps that leak data, like WhatsApp and Instagram (I don't have Facebook but that's where it would go). That's like a second phone with no sim card.
I use Authy too and I install it on both device for preventing this to occur.
All my laptop data are on a private secured NextCloud.
My computer broke down a month ago and I had to get a new one where I am these weeks. Not convenient for the keyboard layout!
I hesitated to get a second sim card (I'm officially based in France where mobile subscriptions are really cheap) but I haven't gone that far yet. However I hardly see myself going back to France to get it shipped. But I'm mostly around Europe or America, where shipping may be less of a pain…
I also had issues with credit cards, but of course I have spares in a separate bag. Nevertheless, because I move a little too often it's always tricky to know where to get it to…
I'll think through it and consider options. Good reminders here 👌

That's interesting!!! Ok, so you can install authy on both devices and it works? For some reason, I thought it was attached to your phone number.
I don't know what NextCloud is, but I need to look that up. Most of my stuff is backed up on an external hard drive...hopefully that's good enough? I know clouds are better. But knowing me I'd lose the password even though I use LastPass.
Oh haha yeah the keyboard layout can be a mess if it's another language!! eek.
Yeah, I trust mail to pretty much usually always get there in Europe or US, but in Asia not as much. Even something I sent to someone from Indonesia never arrived =/. I DID finally get my debit card here in Vietnam though after a month of trying. Third time's the charm!
Customs will sometimes hold your stuff hostage and you have to pay a bribe to get your package. I usually also have spare cards, but that's a whole differerent long story.
I move a little too often too. Haha I think I'm going to stay somewhere for at least 6 months. Definitely doing the backup phone thing, even if one is cheap.
Thanks for the tips!

NextCloud is a home-based cloud solution (on your server or on a raspberry-pi or a server at "home"). Like a DropBox + Google Contact + Agenda + …, but with privacy and more space (as it's on your own disks).
Even if Authy is attached to your phone number, you are still able to activate it on your second phone while receiving the SMS code on your first mobile ;)
I guess I need to write some day about these things on SteemIt too…

I put off buying a real camera for a long time. I finally got one and I know that I would have hated to lug it around on my 2-year trip. I love the quality of the photos, but they come at a pretty hefty price (literally) :)
I plan on traveling with my new camera, but I still haven't found a good way to carry it without it being obtrusive. And honestly, I probably used more cell phone photos in my Nothern Loop Vietnam series than camera photos. It's so much easier to reach my into my pocket instead of a backpack/camera bag.

haha yes I hate carrying stuff around! lol. I was going to research good quality cameras that aren't so obnoxious to carry. Does that not exist?
I agree. I wonder if I realistically WOULD reach into my camera bag. Also, you can pretend you're playing on your phone to sneak in some candid shots where people might otherwise be put off by it lol

I've seen Oppos and they look good, but I never noticed the specs. I'd totally try a lightly used one (I'm weird, I've never bought a brand new phone before). So glad you saw this!

My wife’s phone was stolen a couple of years ago when we were in Peru. Honestly, the passports were more of a hassle. We missed a day of travel because of it. And the police report was not an easy thing to get filed. We were traveling together, so we had my phone which we did not use internationally anyway. We only use the phones in WiFi mode overseas.
Sorry about your hassle. I can feel your pain. And have.
