in travelfeed •  5 years ago  (edited)

Our article on the trip we did in Kazakhstan consists of 4 parts.

Start with Part 1 - the introduction to this article. Here you'll see our whole itinerary for the 7 days trip in Kazakhstan:

Part 2 describes the 3 days we spent in Almaty:

This part describes the 2 days we spent in the Shymbulak Ski Resort, which is the biggest Ski resort in Central Asia. We visited in June, so we didn't ski, instead we did a lot of hiking.

Day 3 – 5

Shymbulak Ski Resort

To get there you can call a Y.Taxi, which will take you to Medeu. Regular cars are not allowed to go further up to the montains, which is where Shymbulak Resort is. But there are buses going from Medeu to Shymbulak every 15 minutes. Buy a one way ticket at the booth for about 1.30 USD. The bus ride will take about 20 minutes.

You can also take bus No 12 from the city to Medeu instead of the Y.Taxi. (You can get a ticket on the bus for about 0.80 USD). We took the bus on the way back from Medeu to Almaty, and it took about an hour to get to the centre.
We didn’t ski as this was in the summer, but the area is great for trekking. The hotel is 2,000 meters above sea level, so it may take a little time to adjust to the altitude.

There are many trekking routes, download Wikiloc app, which will let you choose routes based on difficulty and length.

The hotel has a sauna for an extra charge of 13 USD per hour, which is nice to use as the temperature is quite low because of the altitude. ( around 15 C in June).
There is a cable car, but it was closed when we visited in June, we were told it reopens for the summer season in the beginning of July.

Our room at the hotel was basic but good enough, and very quiet:

The hotel had a restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere and nice food, a meal for 2 people with drinks for around 30 - 40 USD:
