These aren't the main waterfalls but I wanted a cool picture for the thumbnail. I'm not showing the highest falls until you read through this (or scroll to the end, cheater).

I had to take a day trip to Ithaca, NY so before I drove home (2.5 hours) I decided to visit one of the nearby Finger Lakes and go for a hike. Ithaca sits just south of the southern end of Cayuga Lake, which is one of the 11 Finger Lakes. These are narrow but deep lakes that all run generally north-south. Cayuga Lake is the largest. It resembles a wide river, except I was near enough to see where it ends. The photos below were taken with a 200 mm lens but it still is a pretty narrow lake despite this being the widest of the Finger Lakes.

This was right next to the entrance to the Taughannock Falls gorge trail. It's just a quarter mile hike on mostly flat surface so this is fairly easy for most people.

There were a few smaller waterfalls along the trail. The stream was also a great scene for photos. Parts of the stream are dried up making it possible to walk out on it. Still there is plenty of water to create spectacular waterfalls.

And now around the turn we get to Taughannock Falls, and they're amazing. At 215 feet, they are higher than Niagara Falls (188 feet).

I also drove up to a lookout point to get a photo from another angle.

I wish I had more time to spend there. I will have to come back another time when I have a few days. A bike ride would be cool but it could be very hilly. Maybe it's worth it. There are actually some very affordable private campsites around here that I found on Hipcamp. Some are as low as $15 a night on weekdays.
