Hello Steemits Friends!
One of my favourite things to do on my trip is “Nocturnal Tour’. On nocturnal tour, you can see real-active animals behaviour which you cannot see in day time. All nocturnal animals are awake, alive and pretty active, also it’s so fun to find them just by the spotlight! Here are some animals which I found on the nocturnal tour of Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on Kangaroo Island.
1. Koalas
Most of you have seen Koalas on the trees, sleeping or being lazy munching eucalyptus leaves. However, night time they are very active. They come down to the ground and run quite fast, some of them are jumping tree branch to other branch, if you are lucky they might come close to you find out what you are!
If you are interested in Koalas and wanna find out more, I have post for you!
Koalas on the Island
2. Possums
Unfortunately lots of people think they are annoying pest especially in the city. However, on Kangaroo Island you will be able to see them in the wild with native habitat, amongst trees and greenery and other much landscapes.
Possums on the island, they make their dens in tree hollows or caves instead of someones house roof. The food is depend on where they live, normally it will be flowers, shoots, fruits, leaves, seeds
and insects, bird eggs and so on.
3. Wallabies
If you wanna see wild wallaby on Kangaroo Island, the best places will be Flinders Chase National Park and Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Kangaroo Island Tammar Wallaby has thicker fur and personally, I think they are prettier than main land ones. I was lucky to see the mum and baby in her pouch, it was so cute!
4. Echidnas
Echidna is an egg-laying mammal with sharp spines on its back and side. They are bit hard to find because of the shape, in the bush they just look like some kind of plant from the ground (like grass tree). They don’t seem to care about human when they are looking for food, sometimes you can see them right in front of you .
5. Wild Owls
Lucky me! I found Boobook Owl on the tour. The Boobook is the smallest and most familiar of the Owls in Australia, but still very exciting to spot wild owls by myself. It is great experience to explore in the dark with only one torch and find wildlife!
After tours, if you are staying night here, before you get in to the cabin you might be able to find thick tailed gecko.
0. Kangaroos (Before Tour)
Usually the tour starts at sunset, so you can enjoy beautiful sunset scenery and more likely to see active Kangaroos because they are active dusk and dawns more. They look like hugging each other but actually fighting.
Don't Forget Enjoying Darkness!! Stars are Brilliant!!
When you finish tour, please please look up the sky. You will find beautiful milky way in the dark night sky. It's shame I couldn't get any good photo to show you how beautiful it was, but absolutely stunning. Since the island doesn't have anything bright, it can be real dark. If you would like, turn off your torch. You will enjoy the complete darkness and sound of silence.
Also the moment of sunset is amazing! so even it's nocturnal tour, please don't miss any opportunity to see the remarkable sky changes!
