Travel Tip: Pricovy Windmill, one of the largest (and most mysterious) windmills in Europe

in traveltip •  6 years ago

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I will take you to one of the most mysterious places in the country, the legendary Pricovy Windmill.

Located in the tiny village of Pricovy in the Pribram Region, just some 40 km (25 mi) outside of Prague, the Pricovy Windmill is a ruin of what used to be one of the largest Dutch-type windmills ever built in Europe.

Since the windmill has been badly damaged for centuries, is it not known what it looked like when it was intact. The origin of the windmill is also uncertain. Some historians suggest the windmill might have been constructed by Jakub Krcin, a renowned pond builder, as early as in the second half of the 16th century.

These days, the Pricovy Windmill serves as a popular tourist attraction as there are many hiking trails and cycling paths leading to it. The surrounding landscape, occasionally lined with picturesque historic towns and villages such as Sedlcany or Osecany, also offers great conditions for hiking and other outdoor activities.

Czech Republic is very nice. cant wait to visit soon

You definitely should, it sure is worth it!

Great image, and very good history, it must be fantastic to get there by bicycle ...

Oh yeah, I would love to go on some biking trails over there.....

It's such a shame nobody know what it originally looked like, I wonder if in future someone will generate a digital reproduction of the building based on what is left now to work with.

Hi @czechglobalhosts, Pricovy Windmill is a really mystery looks indeed. But I think lot of explorers come to there and find behind mystery story. Seems most oldest windmill and greatest technology used for build up using powerful stones. Hiking trails & cycling ways increase tourist attraction to here. Everyone prefer to be relax with interesting outdoor activities of them like hiking etc... Thanks to the nice travel tip.

What could have it looked like in the olden days @czechglobalhosts? I'm curious as well. And by the way, it looks massive!

Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend! 😊

The dimensions of the mill are really impressive, I have seen that it is right next to a road so it can be reached easily, it seems the perfect place to visit and enjoy nature while doing a bike ride

Picovy windmill. Whoa! This looks so great. Now it is in ruins but still this is the reason making it great. I think it looks like colloseum of Rome. Awesome photography and the travel tip series too. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work.
