Travel Tip: Strekov Castle, one of the scariest castles in the Czech Republic!

in traveltip •  6 years ago

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I will take to you to a place that is definitely not for the faint-hearted, the infamous castle of Strekov.

Located right in the city of Usti nad Labem, one of the biggest cities in the northern part of country, the Strekov Castle is a ruined medieval castle that was built in the early 14th century on an isolated rocky hill.

Throughout the centuries, the castle was owned by numerous noble people and served many different purposes. In the 19th century, it became a popular spot for Romanticism artists such as Johan Wolfgang Geothe, Richard Wagner or Karel Hynek Macha who visited this place regularly to draw inspiration for their work.

Nevertheless, there is another thing that made Strekov famous. It is the old legend according to which, the castle is haunted by a ghost of a girl who committed suicide by jumping to her death from the rock after her father imprisoned her lover and starved him to death. The legend has it that, in every rainy night, the ghost climbs up the rock to get back to the castle.

Dreamland? I like that:).....

Oh my goodness!! What a great place it is! Surrounded by mountains and look at the sky, looking marvelous. The green mountains are a great place to spend time with your friends/family. Thanks for sharing this amazing place!

Yep, it sure has beautiful surroundings......

Another place to add to my list :p I'm amazed to know that it is built in 14th century, and also shocking part is that it is situation on hills, and this makes it's look a little bit horrible @czechglobalhosts. I'm i right?

Oh wow wht a Scary place lucky who see this at there

Oh wow. Great place. Great capture shoot. Very beautigul. But look scarie. Hope i will see this place in czech.

After I read the post about I was immediately drawn to the history of the castle. I did some searching on the internet to find the rich history it has. Not is this castle on a strategically based position but its original intent was to guard a very important trade route.

Within a few hundred years of it existence it exchanged hands due to its important positioning and also played a big role in several wars. It can be said that the haunting history of this historical building has more than one perspective. There was so much to read that I can write a full post to just get started............

It is an ancient place, filled up with a lot of beauty. Even it was ruined, it doesn't look that it has any kind of those marks which indicates it was tried to damage.

Fascinating Thomas, big spooky castles are awesome! Don't have much of that in the States where I'm from.

So I just arrived in Prague this evening! Part of why I'm here is because of you and your blog. Thanks for the inspiration! Now to see this place first hand. I'm excited. Have a great day! -Dan

We're neighbors, I'm originally from Poland (and currently living there too). I would love to explore more of Czech as I've only been to Prague. This looks like a beautiful area.

And in what part of the Czech Republic is this castle? Far from Prague?
I really love the castles of the Czech Republic, I saw a few. Some of them outside resemble a modern multi-storey house, which greatly embarrassed me when I saw them for the first time.
Thanks for the post, I'm looking for new interesting places for my travels!
